Born in Warrington, Pete McCarthy decides to go back to rural Ireland, to rediscover his Irishness. The feeling that you have heard this sort of thing all before doesn't last for long. There is a serious writer struggling to make himself heard above the many excellent jokes and this is what makes McCarthy's book so distinctive. Although he can crack Brysonesque quips with the best of them ("I've often wondered how businessmen used to cope before [mobile phones] were invented. How did they tell their wives they were on the train?"), and take us through hilarious and largely drunken set-pieces, McCarthy is equally at home discussing Celtic standing stones and the potato famine.
The resulting book is a wonderful debut. By the end, we, too, would like to move to Ireland. You sense that McCarthy has such a genuine feeling for Ireland, Irishness and Irish history that he can only temper his writing with side-splitting humour. While most travel writers seek out opportunities to meet the famous--or the infamous--McCarthy has the charming knack of just bumping into them on his rambles, which is how he met Noel Redding, formerly of Jimi Hendrix's band, and the author Frank McCourt. Far more interesting, though, are the eccentric and talkative bachelors and landladies who turn up in pubs, B&Bs, and the middle of the road. Das Buch macht wirklich Lust auf einen erneuten Irland-Besuch!! Die "irischen" Erfahrungen von Pete Mc Carthy kann ich nur unterschreiben, auch wenn ich nicht auf der Suche nach meinen "Roots" war und keinen Pub meines Namens gesucht bzw. gefunden habe ;-))))
(Ist auf englisch übrigens gut zu lesen!)
This is a hilarious book full of jokes about the Irish and other people travelling around Ireland and indeed people moving to Ireland because they feel the same draw to the land as the author. The book shows all the stereotypes youve ever heard about the Irish from the drunken friendliness of people he meets in the pubs to the women running the b&bs where he stays.
A brilliant and hilarious piece of work, ideal for a plane journey (or any other time when you get a bit bored), just be warned that if you do read it in public you might be considered mad for all the laughing you will do!
