The Creed sequels have had is ups and downs: first Locke tried for serious action then made the misstake with a pseudo fantasy/mystery (Now and Then). At last he found his metier and rocked with his last ones. Stopping to take himself tooExtremely funny, fast paced, with lots of twists and turns, revelations and fortunately enough open questions at the end to make one crave the next book of the series ~ hopefully coming soon... Although it will be very hard to top "Maybe" I'm afraid.

When I read Locke's first novels I was hooked. He was absolutely refreshing, funny, and original. Those days appear to be gone. Gone are the unique and humorous side characters that brought joy to the reader. Gone also are the witty & inventive plots.

Has Locke become a victim of his own success? It appears so. Sure, he has his loyal groupies who would give him 5 stars regardless of the quality (or lack thereof) of his writing. I attribute this to John's marketing expertise, and his willingness to engage with his readers. He even wrote a book about how good he is at marketing!

"Maybe" is not a great book. It's not even a good book. It is totally forgettable, as are Locke's last few books.

Ratings are extremely important to John. He makes no bones about it. So, if, like I do, you find one of his books below standard, leave an appropriate review.

John; get back to where you once belonged!

I read this in a single sitting. (Rare for me.)I'm an admitted fan of Locke's writing and particularly of the Donovan Creed series. Maybe is the best of the best of the series, hands down! Maybe brings together a number of issues from his characters from previous books into a tight , well written, funny and totally unpredictable read. Donovan Creed, experienced assasin and his beautiful female partner have to deal with coutesans, the carnage created by a mad chemist touring the country poisoning people, assasins who are trying to kill them and the problems created by the newest assasin on the team when she murders her supposed boyfriend. The newest assasin on the team is Creed's own daughter! Crazy characters, funny scenarios,zany plot, great writing and just plain enjoyment. If you're looking for a plain zany, exciting read written in the spirit of writers like Carl Hiaasen, Randy Wayne White and other's of the genre' without the south Florida scenes, John Locke and "Maybe" may just be the ticket. Be good to yourself, give "Maybe" a read.

I began reading with an open mind. Most of the book is written as single lines of dialogue, with any exposition limited to a few sentences of cursory description, which often simply recaps one of the four hundred earlier books that make up this author's catalog. I was reminded of the simpler of the Nancy Drew mysteries. But with foul language and lots of gore and sex.

Perhaps this is the future of books. I couldn't help thinking that the novel might well have been written using twitter. There are few parts that are over 140 characters. Unfortunately I tend to like my books with a little more weight and this has the substance of cotton candy, with about as much entertainment value. I stopped reading halfway through. Whatever Mr. Locke is doing, has appeal to someone. So does Jack in the Box. I just don't eat there.
