Amazon.com

Provocative preacher-teacher Michael Eric Dyson, known for his hip-hop-style delivery and encyclopedic intellectual powers, heroically tries to update and examine the true legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. for a glib Generation-X world. Calling I May Not Get There with You a work of "biocriticism," Dyson peels away the superficial image of King the man to reveal a complex human being whose work was far from finished or totally understood. "In the last thirty years we have trapped King in romantic images or frozen his legacy in worship," he writes. "I seek to rescue King from his admirers and deliver him from his foes." To that end, Dyson takes aim at neoconservatives like Shelby Steele, who spin King's multiracial dreams into a right-wing call to end affirmative action, and goes after black militants who thought King was "soft" and overlooked the power of his "black radical Christianity." He also criticizes the government's co-opting of King's philosophy in a holiday, as well as what he calls the King family's well-meaning, but destructive, attempts to protect King's legacy. Dyson forces us to accept King for all of his faults--including plagiarism and womanizing--but more importantly allows us to see a real human being who rose to the height of humanity. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

From Booklist

Dyson offers scathing criticism of liberals and conservatives, blacks and whites, and even former colleagues and the King family for various transgressions, from exploitation to neglect, of the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Conservatives have cited King's color-blind teachings in arguments against affirmative action, and the King family has reduced his legacy to fights about intellectual property rights. In this well-documented work, Dyson explores King's little known or forgotten views: his support of the concepts of affirmative action and democratic socialism and his cynicism about white Americans. Dyson explores King's personal failings (his promiscuity and plagiarism), putting them in the context of the life and times of an extraordinary man. Despite King's image as a "safe Negro" leader, Dyson modernizes King's legacy in parallels to young rappers and black nationalists, the current angry voices on race. Dyson, a minister and Columbia University professor, offers passionate and insightful analysis of a man who "helped redefine our country's destiny as a private citizen in a remarkable career that lasted a mere thirteen years." Dyson's book was very welcome because he made some criticisms of MLK that those of us who are white can't make. I was disturbed initially when information came out about all King's misdeeds with women. The idea that preachers {of all races} trade on the power they have to "get" women is one I've experienced for years. I'm so glad that Dyson points the finger at a man who was great but had many flaws especially where women were concerned. The book was readable but a little repetitive.

I picked up this book for further insight on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In doing so, I was mainly looking for facts, not an analysis of King's behavior and methods of leadership. IMO, what Dyson failed to do with this book was give the reader enough adequate facts about the leader. We all have heard of the talk of King's infidelity and plagarism, but instead of justifying his flaws with a personal analysis of King, I would have rather read about more of his achievements and ideology. Not to say that these things are not present in the book, it is just that I cannot get a true feel of what King was about if most of the context of the book was based on analysis and theory. When I got this book, I was really looking forward to obtaining some new information, not a continuation of nonsense about how the King family is trying to make a living off the the leader's legacy. This book really left me wanting to know more. When I finished, I almost felt like I had not read the book at all.

I was caught up in this book because it made Dr. King a living man, not an icon. Dr. Dyson's intellectual pretensions notwithstanding(hooking up Dr. King with rapppers?) he does bring history home and shows us the type of man we all knew, similar to other bright colleagues who were not as famous. His bibliography is terrific but the writing could be more in depth and not come off as an attempted apology. King was a philanderer. So what? Most powerful men and women are. But don't justify it on some holy basis. He was just weak in some circumstances and hopefully, sought forgiveness with his God.
