Grade 4-6 Dahl's latest piece of madcap mayhem is a story filled with the elements that his fans cravesardonic humor, the evilest of villians, the most virtuous of heroines, and children who eventually defeat those big bad grown-ups. In this book, Matilda isn't just smart, she is ``extra-ordinary. . .sensitive and brilliant,'' reading Great Expectations as a four year old. Unfortunately, her TV-addict parents neither recognize nor appreciate their daughter's genius. Neglected Matilda finds mentors in librarian Mrs. Phelps and teacher Miss Honey, a woman as sweet as her name implies. Miss Honey, Matilda, and other students are tormented by the child-hating headmistress Trunchbull. Trunchbull has also cheated orphaned niece Miss Honey out of her rightful inheritance, leaving the teacher in extreme poverty. Having practiced revenge techniques on her father, Matilda now applies her untapped mental powers to rid the school of Trunchbull and restore Miss Honey's financial security. If the conclusion is a bit too rapid, the transitions between Matilda's home and school life a bit choppy, and the writing style not as even as in some of Dahl's earlier titles, young readers won't mind. Dahl has written another fun and funny book with a child's perspective on an adult world. As usual, Blake's comical sketches are the perfect complement to the satirical humor. Okay, So I might not be in the catchment of Roald Dahl's books anymore at the age of 20, but this is still my number 1 favourite childrens book.
Matilda is a little girl who has mean old parents. She goes to school one day and makes her teacher Miss Honey,realise that she is very intelligent, and she starts to see what she can do with her skills, and this leads to all sorts of exciting capers, for she is a very special little girl. Watch as she gets her own back on everyone thats mean!
Anyway I will tell you no more as I have already seen the many other reviewers have given away the ending! Parents- buy your children this book. It doesn't talk about cruel realities of life, or things that you should be telling your child about once they get old enough, it's a good old fashioned fairy tale with a modern approach .A brilliant story and Roald Dahls story telling abilities are really amazing!
My family brought me up on Roald Dahl, they were the first books I ever read by myself and I will remember them all my life as the most fun, great, and imaginative stories to read, that real encouraged me to start to read and helped my vocabulary as a child!
Even if your not a kid- This is a book that's such great fun to read!

Mein Sohn (12j., 6.Klasse) hat das Buch mit Begeisterung gelesen. Die Sprache ist gut verständlich, sehr bildreich, die Handlung interessant- ein idealer Einstieg in englische Lektüre.

Haben Sie schon mal ein Kinderbuch von Dahl gelesen? Nein? Ich kann ihnen nur sagen: Vorsicht. Dieser Mann macht vor nichts Halt!
Genau das ist der Grund, warum Kinder die Dahl-Geschichten so heiß lieben: Beim Lesen mal ängstlich die Decke über den Kopf ziehen, mal sich ausschütten vor Lachen, und immer wieder staunen, staunen, staunen über die Ideenvielfalt und die herrlichen Superlative seiner Helden.
Als Matilda eingeschult wird, hat noch niemand ihre Hochbegabung bemerkt. Kein Wunder: Ihr Vater ist ein windiger Autohändler, ihre Mutter eine vielbeschäftigte Bingospielerin --- und beide halten Bücher und Bildung für völlig überflüssig.
Erst ihre muntere Klasse - allen voran die junge Lehrerin Fräulein Honig - befreit Matilda aus ihrer Isolation. Die Welt könnte jetzt ganz in Ordnung sein, wäre da nicht noch die Schulleiterin Knüppelkuh, mit der ganz und gar nicht zu spaßen ist. Wenn aber Matilda eines hasst, so ist es Ungerechtigkeit. Und da verleiht ihr der Zorn ungeahnte Kräfte... aber mehr soll nicht verraten werden!

Honestly after the third description of the headmistress' cruelty I got bored. The end is nice again. But all in all I must say that Roald Dahl has written much better books.
