In Innumeracy (1990), Paulos deplored the sad state of the general public's mathematical knowledge. Now he continues that disquisition by using newspaper features--headlined article, book review, sports story, etc.--as vehicles for explaining mathematical concepts and how they figure in the business of being a well-informed citizen. For instance, he uses stories on the economy to illustrate prediction, regression analysis, statistics, and game theory and how those tools are used to both illuminate and obfuscate underlying truth. Knowing such techniques and their uses better enables you to dispel the fears often caused by media stories that rely on audience ignorance and nai{‹}vete{‚} to pump up attention-getting excitement. Paulos adopts the somewhat random nature of newspaper presentation to confer casual structure to the excursion through his mathematical world and to congenially give us opportunity to make some of his techniques and, more important, a mathematical worldview our own. This book read as if Paulos began with a list of common mathematical fallacies and went looking for archetypal examples of them. In many places he doesn't even use specific examples, instead describing a type of story without referring to any particular ones. I really missed the sense that he was reacting to real articles; it seemed more like he was contriving neatly exemplary, and hermetically sealed, examples.
Paulos should have concentrated on a collection of the newspapers that went out on a given day, or on a single paper over time. That way he could have stumbled across some of the more muddled and spontaneous uses of number in the news, and his math primer reactions could have been less pat.
Ultimately this book failed to surprise me with anything. It was pleasant, but not delightful.

Althought it took a few chapters to get in to the groove of the book, "A Mathematician Reads the Newspaper" quickly drew my interest. Although some topics are repetitive, and at times you wonder what the point is, in essence the author does a good job at teaching us how to understand what we read. Broken down in short (2-3 page) chapters, this book is ideal for people who need something to read for 5-10 minutes - although it is just as rewarding in a longer-term reading session. The use of complex math is limited, and he explains things well - although some may have to re-read his mathematical and logical points to fully understand them. Overall, for people intrigued with logic, mathematics, or understanding how people perceive the world, it's a worthy read.

Of the three main books written by John Allen Paulos - this is the best. He popularized the term Innumeracy - defined as incompetence with numbers rather than words. His main theses presented throughout his books are the average citizen does not understand the mathematical concepts of statistics, probability (risk), order of magnitudes etc. properly and result in making many incorrect assumptions and decisions in their everyday life.
In this book, Paulos presents his views on how mathematics is used and misused in the popular media. He discusses how reports of numbers are misleading or inaccurate. Many misperceptions are sometimes presented by authors through their own innumeracy, however many writers with "hidden agendas" sometimes choose to present numbers to their advantage to prove or convince you of their point of view.
Paulos discusses mathematics in relation to a person who is reading the "stories" in their daily newspaper and divides his essays into sections as you would read in a daily newspaper.
This book is still relevant today and well worth reading. It is intended for the general public to make them more aware and critical of the numerical fallacies that you "see" in the everyday media.
