For some reason, this book is used in undergraduate programs across the nation. I don't know why, this is miles above Boas. This is definitively a graduate textbook. And when viewed as a graduate textbook, it is phenomenal. In fact, it's a bit on the easy side for graduate students, but it's nice to coalesce and generalize all your knowledge gained in undergraduate courses. It covers everything you need to know for Jackson, Sakurai, Goldstein and much more.

It seems as the others of this book picked up Jackson and said "this isn't a derivation, he just stated the result," then decided to develop it in this book. Jackson develops Green functions in like three paragraphs and thinks it is sufficient for somebody new to the topic. AW takes Greens functions and does the work that Jackson was too lazy to do for you.

I was recently the teaching assistant for an undergrad class where this book was used. This book should really not be used as an introduction to these topics.

As a PhD student in physics with exposure to all the topics we covered, I personally found some of the sections to be very interesting reads, but had to watch my students struggle through material that shouldn't have been so difficult to grasp.

I would recommend the book by Mary Boas over this one (which happens to be the book I used for my undergrad math methods class).

This is an excellent reference for all aspects of "real world" physics. Arfkin presentation of the subject mater is excellent and stands as a model for subsequent treatise on the subject. The book should be used at the graduate level after some exposure and actual application of the abstract mathematics.

This book was required for one of my mathematics classes, and while it is a decent text, it could be far better. It seems to almost be intended as a desk reference for people who have already completed their degrees rather than as a textbook for those who are learning the material for the first time. With some patience and a fair amount of time, there is a lot you can learn from this text, though.

Its okay as an undergraduate text, but definitely not enough mathematical rigor or physical intuition for a graduate textbook. I will say that it does have a few interesting examples, and its a very quick reference if you need a formula or table (especially for special functions).
