Pressestimmen

"...this book fulfills its intention to bring together the diverse aspects of material properties, processing and geometry, to give the design engineer a systematic method of materials selection." - Materials World "This book is unique in its presentation of materials and design information. The author provides 16 chapters and four appendices stuffed with information presented in a manner not typically seen before...At the price of the book and the pure entertainment value it brings to someone interested in materials technology presented from a totally different aspect, I suggest that it is a welcome addition to your reference library" - Sampe Journal, June 2000 Michael Ashby has renewed the field, with elegance and efficiency. The present book is the third edition of what has now become a classic. As well as providing an excellent textbook, it brings to the reader the "state of the art" in the field to those willing to get involved in this new research topic." - Yves Brechet, MRS Bulletin 2005

Kurzbeschreibung

Understanding materials, their properties and behaviour is fundamental to engineering design, and a key application of materials science. Written for all students of engineering, materials science and design, this book describes the procedures for material selection in mechanical design in order to ensure that the most suitable materials for a given application are identified from the full range of materials and section shapes available. Fully revised and expanded for its third edition, Materials Selection in Mechanical Design is recognised as one of the leading texts available, and offers readers a unique and genuinely innovative resource.

Fully revised and expanded for this third edition, Materials Selection in Mechanical Design is recognised as one of the leading texts, and provides a unique and genuinely innovative resource.

Materials are introduced through their properties; materials selection charts (now available on line) capture the important features of all materials, allowing rapid retrieval of information and application of selection techniques. Merit indices, combined with charts, allow optimisation of the materials selection process. Sources of material property data are reviewed and approaches to their use are given. Material processing and its influence on the design are discussed. New chapters on environmental issues, industrial engineering and materials design are included, as are new worked examples, exercise materials and a separate, online Instructor's Manual. New case studies have been developed to further illustrate procedures and to add to the practical implementation of the text.

unique among materials book 28. November 2000
Format:Taschenbuch
This book is really unique, original and, most important, incredibly useful for people who need to do design work in mechanical engineering. The tone is friendly, Ashby speaks to the reader, and it brings new insights to many subjects. It is an ideal companion to "classical" materials texts (like Callister), bringing the practical edge to the science. The scope of Ashby's book is enormous; it is a huge reference source, with the "selection charts" and bibliography; it even includes an incredible list of materials Web pages !!! Really, you MUST have this book if you need to use "materials" in your work.

Invaluable! 21. September 2000
Von Stephan Stuecklin - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
As a student in Materials Science and Engineering, this book has again and again been a priceless resource. It contains data and references which are clearly presented and precisely commented, and I often catch myself looking up the graphs or the appendices to find the solution to a particular problem. The Case Studies are very instructive and sometimes even amusing to read; they always reinforce a point previously made and give the reader a sense of history for the object in question (telephone, hair dryer, etc.). But the book doesn't stop at purely functional design; it also covers aesthetic aspects with the motto: "Good design works; excellent design also gives pleasure." This is a pleasing book.

Great information -- several typos, however 5. Juni 2003
Von Ein Kunde - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
The graphs and data provide a lot of good information but the book has several typos in key areas which lead to many hours of frustration. Also, I wish the book was offered in hardcover. I appreciate the desire to keep the costs low for the students, but a book like this will be life long resource for working engineers and I don't feel that the book will hold up well over the years with a soft cover.

The Bible of Material Selection 14. Februar 2007
Von Stephen Pomroy - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
5 Stars.

Material Selection in Mechanical Design, by Michael Ashby, is a fantastic book on materials and material selection. I would recommend this book to anybody studying or practicing engineering or material science. The insight provided is invaluable.

The text presents a rational, systematic process for selecting materials in new designs or newly modified designs. With this approach, gone are the days of almost randomly selecting a handfull of materials to study based on personal experience (which is woefully limited in all cases) or what materials might "feel" right. This selection process brings us access to a broader range of materials for consideration as well as a previously unseen level of objectivity in our final selection.

This book is well organized and well written, with theory, data tables/charts, and case studies all bundled into one. The presentation is student friendly and the structure/layout is reference friendly.

Also recommended are Michael Ashby's other material science books:

- Engineering Materials 1: An Introduction to Properties, Applications and Design (with DRH Jones)

- Engineering Materials 2: An Introduction to Microstructures, Processing and Design (with DRH Jones)
