Synopsis

Sex, drugs, & Rock'n Roll. Those are the immortal words, photographer, Ed Brockton hates. Those are the words his girlfriend, Evelyn Winthrop lives by. Set in Oxford, England in 1987, Ed and Evelyn are having problems with their relationship. He wants no reminders of her past and disregards her singing career. Evelyn on the other hand, a free-spirit, wants more out of her relationship with her boyfriend of six years. Not satisfied by her latest recording sessions for Hero's Requiem, Evelyn sets forth to make her music right and places her relationship with Ed on the back burner. Along the way, something from her past appears once more. It's something Ed never knew about and can't erase. Now, it's re-entered her life in a big way and delivers what Ed could never give her. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine andere Ausgabe: Gebundene Ausgabe .

Nicely plotted story 10. Oktober 2013

Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
The book starts off a bit slowly, but quickly picks up pace. Evelyn is at a crossroads in her life. Her recording career is stalled and she's frustrated that no one seems to understand the sound she's looking for. Her seven year relationship with Ed brings her no passion, no romance, no joy and no hope. A friendly local bartender gives her a magazine touting a new recording studio in upstate New York, Evelyn calls, sets an appointment and makes her plans - without her boyfriend Ed. She arrives at I.C.E. Studios with her luggage and a bunch of cassette tapes that have unfinished bits of songs on them. Head producer Jaime Weston, Associate producer Bobby and Engineer Danny are at first stunned and consider sending her away. However, Jaime decides to see if he can make something out of these bits and pieces. As he and the others work on the songs, Jaime and Evelyn start flirting and end up in bed. Since Evelyn has been told she can't have children and Jaime knows that, they use no protection. During the month Evelyn is at the studio, she and Jaime hook up twice and almost a third time.

Just before Evelyn is to return to England, she experiences gastric-type distress and goes to a doctor. He does tests and informs her that she is pregnant. Since she and Ed had not had sex in quite some time, it must be Jaime's. Even though Evelyn loves him she doesn't want to trap him, so she doesn't tell him. She also doesn't want to return to England and Ed because of the stress he will cause her. She becomes Carole's roommate and stays there until well after the baby (Amanda) is born. The baby girl looks just like Jaime. Evelyn and Amanda return to England where Ed is not at all happy to see the baby and certainly doesn't believe Evelyn when she tries to claim it is his. Ed's increasing use of alcohol leads to lots of issues between the two.

Meanwhile, Jaime is depressed and realizes he misses Evelyn. As he searches New York hoping to locate her, people keep telling him she had a baby with her that looked a lot like his daughter or niece. He can't believe that but keeps searching. Eventually, he goes to England and confronts Evelyn while Ed is out of town. He bonds immediately with Amanda and is very happy to have a daughter and wants to be sure he is in her life from then on. They decide to return to New York and live as a family. Ed returns unexpectedly and finds Jaime at the house with Evelyn and Amanda. Drunk, he goes berserk and trashes every gift he ever gave Evelyn and all the glass and much of the furniture in the house. He then packs up and leaves. The next day Jaime, Evelyn and Amanda leave for New York.

It takes several months, but Jaime finally proposes to Evelyn and they marry. He produces another album for her and she is pregnant with their second child. It's a happily ever after ending for them.

While the story is nicely done, some of the language is a bit stilted, which might be the result of trying to make the characters sound like they are from England, or the US, or Canada. Some of the song lyrics in the book don't seem to work well, but it's hard to tell without hearing music with them. If you can get past these and the occasional typo, you'll enjoy the book.

An Engaging Read 16. April 2005
Von Cynthia Wolfe - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
"Marlbor Blues" is an engaging and emotional story of a woman's search for purpose and fulfillment in her personal life and in her career. Evelyn Winthrop is at a crossroads in her life. She is having doubts about the relationship she has with her longtime boyfriend Ed,who loves her but doesn't really seem to understand who she is or what she needs. She is a professional singer with a past that Ed doesn't approve of and wants her to forget. She is also facing a crisis with her career. She is trying to record a new album, and though she knows in her heart how she wants it to sound, she just can't seem to get it right no matter how hard she works at it. She decides to give it one more shot by going to New York to work in a new studio with a well-respected producer who has a reputation for being the best there is. As she works on getting the right sound for her songs, she finds her past catching up with her,and begins to find the answers she needs in a place she never expected.

This is a wonderful story that is romantic without being sappy or fomulaic. It's about finding your passions in life and taking control of your destiny.
