Nach seinem Ausflug in die New Economy ("Marketing der Zukunft") wendet er sich wieder dem Kernthema zu, und zwar mit einem Lexikon zum Thema Marketing von A wie Advertising bis Z wie Zest (dem Vergnügen, den Job als Marketer überhaupt auszuüben).
Es richte sich - so Kotlers eigene Worte - an alle, die keine Lust haben, sich hunderte von Seiten in einem Grundlagenbuch durchzulesen. Ein Werk also für Leute, die die wichtigsten Konzepte schnell, angenehm und kompetent präsentiert bekommen wollen. Den Mangel an Bescheidenheit kann sich Kotler leisten.
Von trocken sachlicher Wörterbuchschreibe keine Spur. Mit immer neuen Beispielen und flotter Darstellung schafft er es, die wichtigsten Marketingkonzepte kurz und unterhaltsam zu beschreiben. Er betont, dass er nicht einfach eine Zusammenfassung seiner Bücher präsentieren wollte. Das gelingt ihm nicht immer. Doch auch die Entwicklung von Marktsegmentierung & Co. und der aktuelle Stand der Dinge sind informativ.
