As one who enjoys British history I really enjoyed this engrossing work. The world of Scotland in 16th century is brought vividly to life, well researched and finely constracted. I have always been fascinated with Mary, Queen of Scots. She was an interesting character but she had the bad luck to have for a cousin and rival Elisabeth of England, one of historys great winners and the history is written by the winners.
Ms. George tells Marys story with power and emotion. She recreates the time, the dampness and cold and the stench of death. Marys romance, intrigue and the desire for laughter, music, dancing and warmth. She, who was a child at the age of nine month already crowned a Queen, a sinner hailed as a saint, a lover denounced as a whore, a woman murdered for her dreams...
This book is a wonderful introduction to the politics of the reign of Mary. Her constant power struggles with her half brother James and the shifting loyalities of the Scottish nobility. Marys Cattholic beliefs differed from the Protestant beliefs that were ambraced by the Scottish people. A fascinating and instructive treatment on the subject of religious intolerance and the related struggle for power.
This is the third Margaret George book I have read and I have been well pleased with each effort. Do not let the length deter you, while Marys life was short. This is one book that you won't want to put it down.
