Kurzbeschreibung

David Mason graduated from the Australian National University with a law degree and an honours degree. Like those around him, he could easily have settled for a life of share portfolios, good suits, new cars and big houses. But David wanted more – he wanted a challenge, an adventure, something beyond the ordinary that would test him physically and mentally. He looked around to see what he could do. Working in an open-cut mine . . . done that. Running a marathon . . . hmm, not hard enough. Climbing Everest . . . maybe? Joining the French Foreign Legion . . . perfect!

MARCHING WITH THE DEVIL is the gripping true story of what happened when an Australian lawyer left his comfortable existence and joined the legendary French Foreign Legion. He stayed for five years and served time in the elite Parachute Regiments. With the motto ‘March or Die’, the legion has a history of pain, grief and glory. David Mason takes us behind the myth to reveal exactly what happens: the adventure, the danger, the drinking, the fighting and the lies that sustain the legend.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A very good read! 15. Juli 2013

This is a very good read about a man who thoughtfully joined the French Foreign Legion and served his entire five years. However, in some respects this is not like other books of its kind. First the author is a bit of an intellectual to the benefit of the book. I also don't think he enjoyed his service in the Legion as much as some other soldiers.

The thought that to mind in reading this book is, "be careful what you ask for."

In that respect I think the author of this book may have run afoul of his romantic notions of what the Legion might be about. Certainly, some of that is the image they present and some of that is the image he presented to himself.

I think most people who have served can say the same about their service. There were times when things were wonderful and times when you wished you had become a dish washer at a truck stop.

While it's safe to say that he didn't regret having performed his service (and did so damn well)....I was surprised to get the feeling that he found the situation to be less than desirable every day for five years. From what I understand, the Legion doesn't look for milk toast characters would be puritans. These men have a purpose to fulfill for the French people.

I would expect that people who engage in such a way of life would be harder than someone who chooses to be a librarian by trade. After all, they have written a blank check, to a foreign government, with the express idea that they will likely be sent to die under a foreign flag. Men who chose to do this are not cut from the same material as the rest of society. As such, I would expect some of them to live to some extent by their own rules.

But none-the-less, I truly enjoyed this book. It only last about a week in my hands. But none-the-less it was quite interesting and easy to ready. Quite frankly it was an interesting story that was told quite well. There is a good deal of humor in the fictitious names he gives many of his commanding officers and his colleagues.

If you enjoyed this book I would strongly recommend reading Evan McGorman's book How to Join the French Foreign Legion and what to Expect when you get there, The Making of a Legionnaire by Bill Paris, and Fighting for the French Foreign legion by Alex Lochrie. For a more historical approach it's hard to be Our Friends beneath the Sands by Martin Windrow.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Raw, honest and easy to read. 10. Februar 2013

This book contradicts many "Glorious" things that you read and hear about the FFL, but sounds like the author is an honest and very straightforward guy. I think that the book is a "must" for all the people interested in knowing more about the legion, or even joining. If I read a book like this along with many others on the same topic I could be very judgmental and maybe I could even disqualify it, but I happen to have a friend that was in the FFL and his experience is very similar to David Mason. My friend joined 10 years later than the author and he says that it sounds like things remain almost the same. For me (A big fan of FFL) my friend's tales were not easy to swallow pills , and I even called him a resented man...But after reading this book, I saw that maybe he was not that mistaken.
Anyway, a good read, I enjoyed the mishaps of David, all his disappointing at some given moments and all the nonsense that he lived thru, he has a great writing style and parts of the book (Like his reason to join) are highly inspiring, and one last thing that I have to congratulate on the author, is that he was kind enough to make an e-book version for the kindle.

I really enjoyed this book. I felt that this was probably a very accurate account of what life is like in the everyday life in the modern Legion.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Marching with the Devil 31. August 2013

The French Foreign Legion was (and still is to a large extent) shrouded in mystery and glamour. In the colonial days it served an understandable purpose as far as France was concerned. After World War II soldiers of fortune, mercenaries and whatever other name they are known by, have become extremely unpopular for many reasons, not the least being the conflicting interests between the main powers and many lesser countries. This book removes all the false impressions of the Legion as being a somewhat super elite force. There are at present many elite units in many armies which can and do offer everything that the really adventurous spirits might want - provided that they have what it takes. David Mason went through the full five years and has written an excellent book on the Legion. Every prospective Legionnaire should read the book. It will also be of considerable interest for people who merely want to know about things military.

A great read, couldn't put it down. The mystique of the Legion is blown away. The reality is quite raw.
