Great beginner's guide or overview of the fundamentals 21. Oktober 2014
Von Kat - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle-Edition mit Audio/Video Verifizierter Kauf
Michelle's book is definitely targeted towards the "younger" reader, maybe someone in the age range of about 15-25, or someone who is just beginning to become interested in beauty and style. Make Up gives a brief overview of almost every category a girl might be interested in, from skin care to dress codes to DIY manicures to achieving the career you want. If you are the kind of person who reads beauty/style magazines, frequents Sephora or some other beauty megastore, browses style-watch blogs, etc - then most of what Michelle writes in the skin care, hair care, make up, and style sections is not going to present a lot of new information. Still, I think there's enough content and advice to each section that there's likely a few new things in here for most people, and this book is not out to be an in-depth guide.

The sections on skin care routine, make-up basics, hair & nail (& hand & foot & lips) care, fashion, and digital life were all fun & fast to read. Each left me with a few new ideas to implement, or at least reminded me of things I keep meaning to do (like I should be wearing vaseline on my eyelashes at every night and on my feet overnight once a week). The only section that didn't hold much appeal for me was the advice on job hunting and internships, but that's because it's clearly targeted towards people who are just beginning to apply for jobs without much experience in their chosen field, and I don't fall into that category. Even so, there's still worthwhile advice in this chapter, especially her work rules for everyone. On the other hand, the chapter on entrepreneurship gives really solid tips for how to succeed if you choose to start your own business. Overall, Make Up is a fun read that gives smart suggestions on virtually everything a girl might want/need to know.

Reading this book is a good use of your time 31. Oktober 2014
Von Adrienne Wheeler, Ed.D. - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
As I carefully read this book I noted that highly successful people are often engaged in numerous simultaneous projects. When they seem to be subdued instead of dynamic, and nothing delightful or invigorating is happening in their lives at the moment, unbeknownst to the rest of us they are thinking up and evaluating new ideas. I believe that Michelle Phan’s life story follows this pattern, her latest endeavors are faithfully reported on social media, so you can easily check this out yourself. Although she has too many accomplishments to list here, her success is evident, she has over 7 million YouTube followers and her startup company Ipsy has $84 million in annual sales. Consequently Michelle’s ability to maintain her ranking as the number one YouTube Beauty guru by creating weekly makeup videos deserves our respect.

Michelle Phan recently released her book which is designed to help teenagers develop style and grace as well as gain a sense of how to make their own luck. The instant popularity of this book can be attributed to Michelle’s role as a YouTube starlet, because readers may be curious about the details of her rise to the top. The book also provides a lot of practical information on how to apply cosmetics, style hair, care for your skin and manicure your nails. Distinguishing herself in many ways besides her outward appearance helped Michelle succeed, she wrote this book was to share that wisdom.

Pretty book, but nothing new here. 14. November 2014
Von Sierra Eggleston - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
First, the good things about the book:

1) It's gorgeous. The book is really quality and heavyweight, with beautiful glossy pages, a pretty, colorful design, and cute endpapers. There is lots of photography throughout the book, along with little sketches and info bubbles defining different terms. The colors and the typography all go really well together, and the whole thing is very well laid out to make this an attractive book you could feel proud to display on your coffee table.

2) It feels personal. You can feel Michelle's voice coming through, with the stories she tells about her childhood, and her own distinct way of speaking. It's cute, informal, and feels like having a chat with an older sister.

Now on to the things I was disappointed about:

1) Generic beauty info. For anyone who's ever read a women's magazine, a lot of the beauty information contained in this book might be redundant. There are no specific tutorials on makeup looks (you'll have to watch her videos for that) and a lot of what Michelle talks about is very generic information that most of us know already. Unless you have never looked at a piece of makeup in your life, you probably know where your t-zone is, what foundation is, and what it means to pluck your eyebrows. This book does cover the absolute basics well, so it might be a great resource for tweens and teens who are just being introduced to the world of taking care of themselves and trying makeup. But if you're already a fan of makeup or Michelle's videos, which I assume most people who buy her book are, you won't find anything new or noteworthy here.

2) Wrong medium. There are a few beauty things mentioned in the book that I don't know how to do yet (for example, a good blowout or a fishtail braid), but a book is not really the medium to learn these things from. Describing a pattern to me just leaves me hopelessly confused. There weren't even pictures or diagrams to help on these parts. It would be much better suited to a video tutorial, which Michelle is already fantastic at anyway.

3) Generic business info. The section I was most excited about, "Turn Your Passion into a Profession", was also very simplistic. The tips provided were common sense things like, "Buy an IP address", "Get money to start your business", "Get on social media". Once again, I think if a teen was reading this and it sparked some interest in them to start their own business, these could be good, valid starting points. But the book doesn't really explain HOW to do these things, or give any information that couldn't be yielded with a quick Google search. If someone has any previous interest on these topics, they will already know these things, and will find nothing new or groundbreaking here.

Overall, I was really hoping to get some unique and useful information from this book. Michelle Phan is a great example of turning what you love into a business, and her story is inspiring, but the book doesn't have anything practical to help others follow in her footsteps. I would recommend this book only to complete makeup novices, tweens or early teens, or someone who just wants a pretty book to display on their table. If you want more than that, stick to Michelle's videos. She really is a fantastic vlogger, but I just don't think a book is the proper medium for what she has to share.

I received this book from Random House, through the service Blogging for Books, in exchange for an honest review. This did not influence the content of my review and all opinions are my own.

The book looks great and I have always been a fan of Michelle ... 17. Januar 2015
Von W. Lin - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
The book looks great and I have always been a fan of Michelle Phan. The writing is okay and quite personal, since we get a view into her personal life and I really liked that. I also liked her thoughts on several things, such as organizing your wardrobe and throwing out the things you don't need anymore.

What I didn't like was that sometimes the book sounded a little... preachy? The overall tone got a little annoying, as she would say things that made me feel like she believes her methods are the best and the most 'morally right' ways. She also refers to herself as a "beauty guru" a few times, which I dislike, mainly because it sounds a little too pretentious and doesn't seem to reflect her overall modest composure. Just little quips like that bother me a little. Other than that, there were a few chapters on skincare and makeup where I found her information too vague to follow. In addition, there was a section on hair braiding which was INSANELY hard to follow and I would've liked a better medium to convey all of this information, such as accompanying step-by-step photos.

Maybe I had expected too much from this book, seeing as to how helpful and visual her tutorials were. It seemed as if there were more photos of her than the products and instructions that we need to actually do things. I wished there were a lot more tutorials on stuff that she posts about online, like different methods of makeup application and her favourite brands of facial moisturizers and stuff like that. I wanted less of her face in my face, and more of the content. It was an okay read and I appreciated that pre-orders get an extra book jacket to replace our covers. I would only recommend this book if you're a huge fan of her as a person, but I would not expect too much as this book is more about "Michelle Phan" than the "Your Life Guide", in my brutally honest opinion.

I want to say that I can understand that a lot of people will disagree with me, but these are just my own personal thoughts on the book. I have nothing against Michelle as a person and I still continue to support her work. Unfortunately, I just did not find this book all that helpful as a guide. I had just expected to find more specific information on how to improve my own life so I can achieve a fraction of the success that she has accumulated so far.

Michelle writes like talking to a friend - 17. Dezember 2014
Von Angela - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
I started watching Michelle Phan YouTube videos in 2008 with my daughters. We would watch the tutorials together and play with makeup trying to recreate the looks. My girls are young so they don't go out in public wearing the makeup but its fun mommy-daughter time. Here is a picture of our recreating New Years Glam look from 2009 on Estrella. When Michelle Phan started her skin care line, Iqqu, in 2009 I bought the scrub that smelled like oatmeal cookies but that venture was short lived. I was proud of Michelle for becoming a Lancôme spokesperson in 2010, and I am a Myglam/Ipsy subscriber since the beginning in 2011. Michelle Phan is so fun and positive. When I heard about her new book: Make Up I couldn't wait to get my hands on it! Michelle Phan writes in the book like she is sharing with a friend. I like that she gives her own routine and tips but says to be creative and make it catered to you and your situation or needs. Michelle is knowledgeable and thorough, hitting on a variety of topics to truly be successful in beauty and life. Makeup: Your Life Guide is aimed at teens and young adults and this book is going to my 12 year old for Christmas :) I received this complimentary in exchange for my review.
