For close to a decade now, crafters of many ages have been enjoying the fruits of polymer clays (aka Fimo, Sculpey, and by other brand names) as easy-to-fashion materials for jewelry. Self-taught artisan Carlson raises the bar and concocts 21 personable creatures few will be able to resist. Even better are the marvelously detailed instructions, from the formation of hands, feet, and faces, to solving 21 common problems, such as crumbly clay and (horrors!) breakage. Though needed amounts of material and finished sizes are not included in the directions, very little is omitted in transforming a once humble material into very realistic beings: included are color photographs, clothing templates, explicit instructions about equipment and basic techniques, and other tips (e.g., prebake the eyeballs). Polymer clay figures used as characters in cartoon films are familiar to us. Because the clay is so easily worked, it is not difficult to make one's own figures to use in doll houses or other miniature settings. Carlson's manual includes general information on supplies and techniques as well as step-by-step projects for a variety of representative figures from a wide range of age groups. The color illustrations showing work in progress as well as finished figures are excellent, and the often humorous clothed characters are portrayed doing many activities.

Das Buch habe ich jetzt schon ein paar Wochen und immer wieder stöbere
ich darin, diese herrlichen Gesichter, diese Erklärungen, einfach
Spitze, auch für Anfänger einfach nachzuvollziehen.

Ich glaube, dass auch in Kindergruppen die Freude für das Modellieren
mit Hilfe dieses Buches geweckt werden würde.

In der Einführung wird u.A. Bezug auf die verschiedenen Arten
von Modelliermassen (Fimo, Sculpey, Cernit usw) genommen,
welche tools man verwenden kann, jede
Figur die auf der Umschlagseite zu sehen ist, ist fast Schritt-für-
Schritt im Buch nachzuarbeiten, einfach Klasse und das in schönen
großen Bildern.

Schade dass es das andere Buch von der Autorin nicht mehr bei
Amazon direkt gibt.

Ich kann das Buch nur empfehlen. Einfach prächtig!

Das Buch zeigt an hand vieler Fotos die verschiedenen Arbeitsabläufe.
Selbst wenn man nicht gut Englisch kann, versteht man es dadurch sehr gut.

Ms Carson is truly a master sculptor, and the clay figures in the book are nothing short of amazing. She gives step-by-step instructions on how to construct each figure, but there is no way on God's green earth that I could ever hope to make one. IMHO this book is almost like using the Mona Lisa as a project in a "How to Paint by Numbers" book. Buy this book if you want to see some beautifully crafted works of art or if you are a professional clay artist looking for a new challenge, but don't buy it as a beginner how-to on clay figurine construction.
