This story grabbed me from the beginning, perhaps because I am a fifty-something woman. The protagonist is living a middle-aged woman's worst nightmare-she discovers her husband is having an affair. Her best friend whisks her away from it all, to the friend's family home in Hawaii. As Nola gets caught up in the trials and tribulations of her friend's family, she finds healing and a whole lot more.
I love stories that tell us about ordinary people (like myself) who find their own unique strengths when they are challenged by life events. JoAnn Bassett does a great job in this book and the reader gets the added bonus of glimpses into the culture of native Hawaiians. I found myself, for days after finishing the book, wondering what the characters were doing. To me this is a sign of a great book, when the characters have become that real for me.
