In the historic port city of Wilmington NC, every old house has a ghost. The mansion Ashley Wilkes, historic preservationist, is restoring, with its crescendo-thumping spectral organist, is no exception. When Ashley makes a grisly discovery, the residents of quiet, quaint Orange Street are horrified. Halloween weekend finds Ashley and Melanie dressed to kill at the Cape Fear Crime Festival’s costume party where an evil trickster treats them to murder.

"Hunter enthralls her fans with a blend of homicide, history and humor. A must read for those who like mysteries delivered with a strong plot and a light touch." Dorothy P. O'Neill

“I have recently started reading your books on the Wilmington series and have fallen in LOVE. I cannot put them down . Needless to say not a lot is getting done at home.Thank you and GOD BLESS” Anne
“Just finished the last of the nine books in your Wilmington Series via my Kindle. Greatly enjoyed all of them. Are there any more to come? Especially liked the descriptions of the various foods available in Wilmington – makes one want to run right up here. Best wishes for future literary efforts.” William

“I LOVE YOUR BOOKS! I just finished reading your ninth book. I was thrilled to see on your web page that you are writing a tenth! I've come to feel that I really "know" the characters, and enjoy reading about historic Wilmington. I've also fallen in love with the characters, and feel as if I know them as friends. I can't wait till your next in the series. Don't ever stop!” Kathy

“I am a huge fan of your books. I've read all of this series so far. Please don't stop writing this series. You've done such good character development that the readers want these gals to go on and have new adventurer in their married lives. I truly enjoy your stories, please keep going. Thank you,” Jan

“I finished Christmas Wedding yesterday evening and I really loved it. You did a great job with the characters and elements of surprise as well as keeping it believable. I enjoy the historical information you include, it makes me want to come further south the next time we come to the Outer Banks. I have started “Murder at the Bellamy Mansion” and have to really restrain myself to not let my work go and just sit and read. “ Mary Ann

“My mother and I are huge fans of your Magnolia Mysteries book series! We live in Indiana. I have read all of the books that you have written so far, and I was wondering if there will be another book? Thank you for writing your books…they have given me a lot of good entertainment!” Haley

“I just finished the last of the Magnolia Mysteries, when are you going to write more? I love the characters and the settings. You can't just leave your readers guessing about what Melanie, Ashley, Scarlett and the rest will do with all the gold coins they found. Please continue the series. A true fan.” Lucie

“I just stumbled across your first book last weekend and am now up to book 5 - I simply can NOT put them down. They are wonderfully written - with characters you get to know and love and want to know more about. I thoroughly enjoy the descriptions of Wilmington - it sounds like a place I want to visit someday. To top that off, I am thoroughly enjoying the mysteries themselves - you have excellent plot twists and just when I think I've figured out "whodunit" I realize I'm wrong. I've been surprised every time!” Beth

“Just wanted to jot you a quick note of thanks for writing such a wonderful series. I just discovered the Magnolia Mysteries on my kindle last week. After reading the first three, I broke down and bought them all! You have an amazing talent for developing your characters and creating a sense of place in your books. I can't wait to read the rest of them they are such a joy to read!” Angela

    5.0 von 5 Sternen Well written 7. September 2011

Ashley Wilkes has taken on the job of restoring a historic home in Wilmington. This home has a rumor of being haunted. People have heard the organ being played at night.
The home went up for auction after the taxes weren't paid. It was bought by a television star, similar to Martha Stewart, who wants to revamp the kitchen into a set for her cooking show. When they tear out the old dumb waiter they discover two bodies. It must be the previous owners, who were thought to be touring Europe.

This is a pleasantly told mystery with many turns and surprising moments. It captures the history of older homes in the South. While it answers the question about the organ being played in realistic logic, it also leaves the question of ghosts open to the imagination.

I also recommend Stars Shine After Dark, now available as a Kindle.

    4.0 von 5 Sternen Interesting read 12. Dezember 2011

I read this one a while back and while it is part of a longstanding series by the author, it stands alone as do all of her novels in this series.

The storyline was simple enough and I had figured out the story before the book ended. Still, I was entertained and would read more books by this author.

    2.0 von 5 Sternen I knew it was a bad sign... 22. Juli 2013

...when by the end of the second chapter I was muttering "What an idiot!" Without a doubt, this is one of the dumbest heroines I've ever encountered.

The plot was interesting enough--which is why it got two stars instead of one--but the characters are pitiful. Especially the heroine. You know, the Idiot.

In terms of writing style, it reminded me of a high-school girl's: oooh, he's so hot, I just know this is my True Lo-o-o-o-ve. (Actually, that's an insult to a lot of high-school girls--my apologies, ladies.) Given that the Idiot Heroine reminded me a lot of a high-school girl, I suppose the style matched the lead character.

*************** AVAST! HERE BE SPOILERS! **************************************************************

    Okay, now to the nitty-gritty.

    1) She's working with a perfectly nice guy who is obviously interested in her when--GASP!--she spots the lead detective at the homicide scene. She is IN LO-O-O-O-O-VE (and she's pretty sure he's interested in her, too. Squee!) Just kill me now.

    2) This Idiot Heroine is so clueless that she doesn't realize that bullets shot into a body will remain behind with the skeletal remains after the flesh decomposes. Hasn't she ever seen an episode of CSI? Or have any common sense? She actually asks the detective--you know, Her True Lo-oo-o-o-o-ve--why the killer wouldn't have taken the bullets with him or her.

    3) They eat. And eat. And eat. get the idea. Every meal is described. I really, really don't care if she ate the crab cakes or the she-crab bisque. Now, crab cakes laced with arsenic...

    4) The Idiot Heroine has Daddy issues. And Mommy issues. And issues with feeling inferior to her older, prettier, more successful big sister. She has more issues than "National Geographic."

    5) You know that moment in every slasher flick where the heroine goes into the darkened house, even though the deranged killer is in there? We have many moments where the Idiot Heroine does something similar in this very slim volume.

    6) I actually said "Well, duh" at one point. I can't remember what caused that reaction, but she was stating something that was blindingly obvious.

I know cozies are like cotton candy for the brain, but really--this is the type of book that gives cozies a bad name.

I had finished all the Nina Quinn mysteries by Heather Webber, and was hoping that "Murder on the Ghost Walk" would be the start of a beautiful friendship, but I just can't picture enduring another one of the Magnolia Mysteries.

I can, however, wholeheartedly recommend the Nina Quinn series!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Appealing Southern Cozy Romantic Mystery 12. Februar 2012
    Von drkhimxz - Veröffentlicht auf
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I've read a sufficient number of these Kindle Cozy Romance Mysteries to note one of the formula's which have emerged. Attractive lawman, Lady in Distress-but independent mind not helpless as was the case in the era just past, assorted characters containing a sufficiency of alternative possibilities for love and possible marriage, assorted characters containing a sufficiency of possible victims and possible murderers, and heroines incapable of exercising common sense or recognizing any authority which interferes with their right to get into easily avoidable danger. Naturally, these heroines unfailingly uncover the solution to the crime. In this book, the formula is applied (not to say that the author set out to follow a formula) with skill, the plot though knotty is understandable, the characters appealing and unappealing in appropriate fashion, the heroine capable of fright, incapable of following reasonable advice as to her safety, but appealing in her efforts to carve a path to love without being killed, and the hero is both heroic and innately love-worthy. It is said to be the first in a series; it is likely that those entertained by the sub-genre will be interested in continuing the series by acquiring further volumes.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Too many characters, not enough plot 7. Juni 2013
Von Patrice Walker, Author and Fiber Artist - Veröffentlicht auf
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I just finished reading this book last night, and honestly, I couldn't wait to get done so I could go on to my next novel. While the author is good at description, there was just too much of it. And too much dialogue as well. And too many underdeveloped characters to keep track of. All of which to me means, not enough substantive plot. Plus, there was no chemistry between the historic preservationist and the police detective, so the relationship that develops between them wasn't believable. I felt the author rushed the end, and by the time the murderer was revealed, I'd forgotten who he was. I'd say spend more time on plot and have fewer but more well developed characters in future novels.
