Das Buch lässt keinerlei Hintergrundwissen erkennen. Sachverhalte werden nie erklärt. Man bekommt unflexible, isolierte und strukturlose Befehle (à la "Schreiben Sie das in Zeile 3; los, tun sie's endlich"), mit deren Hilfe man schlussendlich Stylesheets modifiziert hat (dazu braucht es doch kein Magentobuch, verdammt!) und im Backend ein paar Bild-URLs eingegeben hat. Verstanden hat man danach nichts. Der Klappentext verspricht zu viel.
Beim Lesen dieses Buches fiel mir auf, was für eine großartige redaktionelle Leistung all meine O'REILLY-Bücher sind! Thumbs up für O'REILLY!!!

Why Packt makes a habit of publishing such unfinished drivel is a mystery. While the book, if the author and publisher had ever bothered to complete the project, or support it with a website, may have once had some merit for a complete beginner given the horrible state of Magento docs, it is in, its present state, utterly worthless.
Save your money. It is already out of date, the code won't work as published, and the author is too lazy, stupid or both to provide a site that supports his efforts so far. Why would both author and publisher put forth some effort, but fail to follow through rendering all the work they did do, worthless in the end?

This book might be good for a complete newcomer to Magento theming, but to really cover the topic thoroughly it would need to be about three times as long. It's just a very short book, and really doesn't teach you anything you can't learn from the forums or just playing around with Magento.
I would have given it two stars, but the book might have value to someone who just wants to throw up a quick and dirty Magento site with minimal theming. If you work with Magento already, I'd give this one a pass.

That's 167 pages with big pictures, so it's a very fast read.
I thought it was a good book, considering how valuable knowing every inch of Magento can be. This is a short read, it just skims over some basic elements of the themes, templates, xml, layout, and other super basic stuff.
I would say that I leaned some design basics from this book, however I found better stuff on youtube and the magentocommerce wiki and how-to pages.
