Alltough I've already got another book on that topic, I've read through this one. It begins at the basics and also explains in detail how to upload stuff via FTP to your hosting provider. Then it goes on to describe how to set-up a Magento Onlineshop from the beginning. Categories, Taxes, Style customization, the different product types, handling payment and shippings are all covered together with some other topics.

Overall, the book makes a very positivie impression, especially since Packt seems to have changed their typography since the last book I've read. It's well illustrated and contains many screenshots with detailed step by step tutorials.

I'd like to recommend this book to everyone that is looking for a helpful book for Magento Newbies.

There's just one remark to the content that bugs me: The author writes that Magento can be run "on almost every hosting service". Well, technically that's true. It will work - somehow. But as soon as your store grows, Magento will eat up way too much performance and it will get pretty slow on a shared hosting infrastructure. I don't see this as a problem for Magento Shop-Owners, if the store grows, they should be able to pay a dedicated hosting. But that should be mentioned somewhere in the book.

Good Magento primer 29. Mai 2009
Von Impartial 1 - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
I purchased this book to get a better understanding of Magento, as I am customizing a store for a client. You get the basics with this book, covering things like installing/configuring the store, adding simple and grouped products, learning how taxes and shipping are handled, and the order processing workflow.

While some may be disappointed by its simplistic overview of Magento, I understood this before I bought it. You can get all the information in this book and more from Magento's site, including video webinars. But, it is useful having a physical copy with you to read during your commute or during some off-time and it's way easier on the eyes than a computer screen.

Designers should know that the topic of themes/templating is NOT covered in this book. For that, refer once again to the Magento site, and don't forget Google. That's why I have been doing.

The one good thing about the book -- and this is mainly for those creating a store for a client -- is the chapter on order processing. It provides lots of screenshots and walks you through how one would handle an order. This is a great section for the client to have, since they (or their staff) will be managing this. On that note, getting the PDF version would save you the trouble of scanning/photocopying that chapter. You can get both the physical book and e-book as a bundle from the PacktPub site.

Most recently, Magento released its own official beginner's guide as a PDF file that you pick up for about $20. Look into this, as it's almost half the price of this book and should have much of the same content that this book has.

Great Book but Out of Date!!! 10. Mai 2011
Von P. Thompson - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
I was so excited to receive this book because I am a true beginner with Magento and was not finding good info on how to start with this program. I found the book to be easy to understand and read but it was written in 2009 and about 50% of the items in the updated version of MagentoGo was not covered in the book. I found myself having to sort of translate the old book into the new interface and also noticed that many items were not addressed at all. Much of the layout and organization in the software is different than the book which frustrated me on top of having to learn about this new E-commerce solution.

Unfortunately, Packt has not put out an updated book and there is virtually no one else with a beginners book aside from the users manual which is not as user friendly.

I had been struggling with trying to figure out how to use basic
fuctions in Magento until I got a copy of the book (I used the ebook version). It accelerated progress 200%.

The book is well laid out and walks you through the basic for setting up a store step by step. Explanations are well thought out and clear.

Highly recommended!

Really good book - very easy to read, has good tips 18. Oktober 2009

I worked with several PHP eCommerce solutions, but Magento is something special. During my first contact with Magento, I felt I can create an excellent out-of-the-box solution with minimum effort.

Like most of the things, if you want to use it properly it is really important to take some advice from experienced users. This book will give you full basic overview Magento and you will be prepared to make your complex webshop in no time. Chapters are written really simplistic, there are a lot of practical examples, tips and tricks and you will need 2-3 days to finish this book.

Beginner's guide will be useful to every experienced developer because it contains really good tips - how to group your products, what you need to keep in mind while you making product categories, how to combine product attributes, how to make grouped items, how to handle tax rates and shipping prices, introduction to stock handling etc.

Developer newbies will be very satisfied with this book because it will give them a full perspective how to create a good webshop. Shop administrators and product editors could also use this book - it has a lot of good information how to define your product, how you can configure search options, product categories on the main menu.

There is one chapter about layout customisation, but it has only basic informations how to change your default settings and how to implement already created Magento template. I would be really satisfied with more information about this topic. How to make your template from the scratch - that would be an excellent chapter. Too bad there is no such chapter in this book.
I have to say there is a really good chapter about payment process, merchant accounts, payment gateway, how to use Google checkout, Paypal and some other payment options.

If you want to learn Magento, this book is a really good option. Combine it with Magento webinars, Magento User Guide and you will be ready to make an excellent eCommerce application.

Begginers Guide 8. Dezember 2009

I thought this was a good book that walks you through setting up a Magento store. It could of been a lot longer because there is a lot to learn when it comes to Magento. I feel like the book shows you almost the bare minimum to get started and not much more. Maybe that was the objective of the book. There were several frustrating things that I had to figure out on my own that I wish had been in the book such as changing the demo store logo in the automated emails that are sent to customers. I also wish there had been a step by step to setting up payment processing with pay pal. Even though I had some minor complaints, I don't think I could have done it without this book. There are so few books out there on Magento which is really a shame since it's such a great product. If you are going to be using Magento I definitely recommend this book. Maybe a better one will come out eventually, but for now this is the best there is.
