1. Deadfolk (2004)
2. Booze and Burn (2005)
3. King of the Road (2006)
4. One Dead Hen (2011)
5. Made of Stone (2013)

The Best Series Being Published 26. März 2013
Von Dman4227 - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
Guess who just got back
that wild-eyed boy that had been away
haven't changed...

...and that's great news. Blakey is back and better than ever. What does this novel offer you ask? Something for everyone:
Vampire and zombie hunters...check
Strong romantic leading male...check (well at least in his mind)
Rambo and Rocky references...up the wazoo
Sheena Easton and Margret Thatcher references...just enough to make you squirm

This book is pitch-perfect. More laugh-out-loud parts than a book has a right to have. Blakey has met a friend who is on par mentally in the swede with our hero. Jock is a perfect mate for Blakey and their adventures belong in the same breath as when you discuss Huck and Finn.

Blakey sets his mind to make the world a safe place for you, me and Little Royston (if he could only locate the little bugger) and he won't let anything stop him. He is a determined do-gooder who tromps through swamps, gulleys and any other obstacle that come his way. He channels Rambo, Rocky, Sean Connery, golems and moles to complete his mission. The book ended way too soon...but I am hoping the adventure will continue soon (that's an order Williams)

I have read that writers should write what they know. If Williams is doing that when he pens the thoughts and adventures of Blakey, he must be a crazy SOB. This is the best series being written today, bar none. This is what a book should be. Even Blakey knows the score and to quote the man..."Royston Blake were back, weren't he? They can come, the pretenders can, but they ain't getting shet of old Blakey" Here is hoping that the next Mangel book is already being penned!

Truly superb 29. März 2013

Blakey is one of literature's great comic creations, like Falstaff or Jeeves! This is perhaps even the best installment yet of the series that began with DEADFOLK. Start there if you haven't read it already, but this one made me laugh out loud more than anything I've read for years. Charlie Williams is a genius!

I Get The Dark Humor In This One 20. Juni 2015
Von James Ellsworth - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
British writer Charlie Williams has created a series and a character NOBODY could LOVE but the whole work is curiously compelling and I find myself reading and reviewing them as they come along. While each novel stands on its own, I recommend starting at the beginning, when Royston Blake, the lead character, is at the top of his very flawed form. Events develop book by book from there as regards his complex character with its mis-wired mental circuitry. The books seem to owe something to the first section of William Faulkner's 'Sound and the Fury' in storytelling method.

This time, I was able to see and to appreciate more of the dark humor other reviewers have found in the Mangel Series. The press conferences held by the local police force are laugh-out-loud funny as the clueless department tries to tamp down crime and put the best face they can on their investigations. As to plot, local all-purpose perpetrator, Royston Blake feels he needs a deluxe vacation. First, he steals a big hearse from a local undertaker's, planning to next steal a nearby caravan. Somehow he expects they will magically hook up and that the underpowered hearse will tow the whole thing on a carefree holiday! Things unravel the minute Blake breaks into the garage at the funeral home. There is a body in the hearse. Blake makes his version of a blazing getaway. His mental aberrations more or less limit him to the constructs of what he has experienced recently or viewed over and over--examples here are Rocky and Rambo movies and the like. Williams imagines what it might be like if a mentally limited man had to face the world armed mainly with those concepts of morality and with sort of hazy versions of those coping skills. What passes for his efforts at philosophy is based on listening to Sean Connery in 'Highlander.'

Mangel is a grim enough city anyway. This time out, the community is facing a turf war over drug distribution and is reacting to an unwelcome influx of immigrants. A grieving and demented alcoholic father named Jock has lost a son to drugs. In his mind, the two scourges have become lumped together as 'Vampires' sucking the life out of the community. He enlists Blake in his campaign to kill them all by driving homemade wooden stakes through their hearts. In back of everything are the dark forces of Mangel's 'Old Guard.' They play a larger role in earlier Mangel books--another reason I urge readers to start at the beginning of the series. The Guard represent brutal forces of pre-Christian nature and of magic more than rational knowing.

barnstorming, hilarious, dark powerhouse of a novel 30. März 2013
Von theo - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
Another brilliantly written, explosive, funny , dark and wonderful edition to the Mangel saga.
One man stands alone, the weight of a whole towns expectation on his shoulders, only he, the chosen one, Royston Blake (the hardest pound for pound head doorman that Mangel has ever seen, who has fallen on bad times, although he dont want no sympathy...) can deliver Mangel from the paranormal darkness that threatens to envelop it.
Two things , this time he's not alone, and he may well be clinically insane....
Teaming up with a new ally, Jock, somebody potentially even more insane than Royston (and that's going some) who is a burger van proprietor and Vampire eradicator, by trade.
As usual, in Mangel nothing is what it seems (definitely not what it seems to Blake, as ever) and dark forces are at work- but if Sean Connery cant help, then who can?
Combining intense action, social commentary, a healthy dose of pitch black humour, and as detailed study of two mens whisky fuelled descent into violent madness , its a triumphant piece of work from Williams, and you will love every page and root for Royston Blake, who as a antihero, is quite simply a work of dark genius that defies simple explanation.
I would definitely recommend this book to anybody with a sense of humour and a love of the underbelly of distinctly British culture.
May contain some swearing, ok a bit... a lot, and in my humble opinion is all the better for it.
