Erziehung an der Lateinschule Stratford, seit Ende der 80er Jahre Schauspieler, um 1585 Übersiedlung nach London, wo er als Regisseur, Dramaturg und Bühnenschriftsteller blieb. 1592 erste Erwähnung als erfolgreicher Dramatiker und Schauspieler, Anschluss an Lord Chamberlain's Company, von 1597 an Mitinhaber des Globe-Theaters.
