On March 26th, seven people are abducted from right across the United States of America.

A charity collector. A schoolboy. A CEO. A UPS delivery driver. A retired schoolteacher. A computer gamer. A hunter. They are just everyday people with nothing in common.

No ransom is demanded. No one knows why they are taken. And no one could possibly imagine the horrors they've been chosen to face. Given no instructions, totally isolated from the outside world, all they find is ice.

From the moment they awaken, the ice begins to melt and their terrifying struggle for survival begins. The ice will push them beyond their limits of endurance. It will reveal their personal secrets. It will torture them in ways they hadn't imagined possible, but it is also their only hope of escape.

As cryptic patterns emerge, the ice reveals its rules. Rules they must obey or die. Thrust into the most horrifying ordeal of their lives, seven strangers must band together to survive. But as the ice melts, what they find inside begins to tear their group apart.

They will learn terrible things about each other. They will learn their own personal limits. Scariest of all, they will learn what humans are capable of when pushed to the edge of sanity.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Mixed feelings (I don't want it to end!) 29. Juli 2013
Von Robertuccio - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
Every once in a while I come across an author whose work I enjoy so much, I get lost in his or her world; I eagerly turn the pages, thirsty for the next line but at the same time I do not want to get to the end.

Such is Shane's talent that I have read all his other books : "Plaza", "Fast", and "After".
(In the spirit of full disclosure, I got "Melt" as an advanced reader's copy from Shane himself.)

Without giving much away, this is it the story of several people who are kidnapped and find themselves in an enclosure of some sort. All are seemingly strangers to each other and there appears to be a common thread. I can however, without a shadow of a doubt, state that I care for each character; I want to know more about them (even the ones that are simply despicable!), their past, their state of mind, even what they think about each other.

Though I am very close to the end of the story, I am not quite ready for the conclusion because I am enthralled by the story and the pace of the narrative.

Warning: if you read this book while on a bus or train, be careful because you might just miss your stop as it happened to me a couple of times.

5.0 von 5 Sternen "They were under estimating humanity's ability to solve it's own problems" 9. August 2013
Von SGL - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
Abducted by unknown assailants. Megan wakes to find herself within a great dome, she's not alone. "They" have abduct seven apparently random individuals, a clear split of male and female from young adult through middle age. Food? Very little bordering on none. Water? A mound of ice, with a diameter 11.3 meters and a height of 6 meters shedding 17000 gallons of water every day. littered about, clearly not randomly placed, within the ice are a variety of items, some useful, some historical and many that may be deadly traps. Megan has no idea who she can trust or even who she can rely on except herself.
This is an enjoyable, well written, thought provoking tale of diminishing resources. Character driven with an eclectic cast of characters, responses and feelings. The situational responses have an authentic and realistic feel. This is the third book of Shane Brown's I've read and I enjoyed them all, in a genre where stories sometimes feel familiar if not similar, these three are different, new and each in different ways, creative and in this case topical. For me a 5 star book is one , aside from being well written, that I keep to read again. As with the others this one definitely qualifies. Well worth the read.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great book! 11. August 2013
Von Afobos - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is what I would call a page turner! You just have to keep turning to find out what's going to happen next! It reminded me a bit of an old twilight zone episode and it had the same unknown eerie what the hell is going on here effect going through the whole book. It kept me interested enough to keep reading and to get to know the characters and all their problems. They had quite a few of those... The end was unexpected, and the book kept you guessing through the very end. I really enjoyed it, and having read Shane's work in the past it kept to his "Fast" paced standards! Great book, that I would definitely recommend to anyone who loves suspense with lots of twists! Great work Shane!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Marooned but NOT on Gilligan's Island 23. August 2013

This is the first book I've read by Shane Brown, but it was good enough for me to want to buy/read his others. I enjoyed some of the science included - particularly the reasoning behind the historical artifacts. Mr. Brown mostly did an excellent job of uncovering (literally and figuratively) his characters' back stories and the reasons for their behavior.

My biggest complaint is that the ending was too abrupt and was not sufficiently explained. Who captured them, why and how the information about their captivity was to be used was glossed over in a couple of pages. I understand the desire to continue to concentrate on the main characters - the captives - but the entire book was based on these questions and the answers were (to my mind) incomplete.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Unexpected, different, and engaging 22. August 2013

I've never read anything written by Shane M. Brown prior to downloading MELT, and when I saw how long it was, I almost put it off for another day. Boy, am I glad I didn't wait!

I was hooked from the beginning, and the pages flew by as I stole moments here and there throughout the day in order to keep reading. The premise was original, the characters were interesting, and the writing was smooth. I wanted to know what everyone was thinking and how they ended up where they were -- even the people I didn't like at all were still fascinating in their own right.

The only negative (for me) was the ending's abruptness. However, the story was actually concluded, so I think I just wanted it to keep going out of sheer nosiness. I wasn't ready to put the book down. A minor negative, and not enough to even pull down the rating.

Definitely a keeper as well as a future re-read.
