Louis van Gaal's biography is well-written, informative and fun to read 31. Juli 2014
Von David Byer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
A more timely book could not have been written, following the third place finish of the Netherlands at the World Cup. Considering the relative overall inexperience of much of the Dutch team, it is amazing what van Gaal was able to do against a volatile field of opponents. But for a failed penalty round against Argentina, they might have again reached the finals....
Now van Gaal, as one of soccers's (for us Yanks) greatest managers, will, with his oft-criticized, yet effective style--which the author admits may take some getting used to by the ManU players--try to bring Manchester back to the days when missing the Champion's League was not an option. The book covers his entire career passing quickly through his youth and focuses on van Gaal's story primarily as a coach and manager at Ajax, Barcelona, Netherlands' national team, winning Champion Cup victories and...controversy...lots of controversy. Meijer takes a journalistic approach while crafting a revealing story about leadership, the "beautiful sport" and most of all determination to win. This is a book certainly for those who are fanatical about the sport, but just as interesting, I think, for those who prefer to just ride the World Cup high every 4 years. It's as much a book about leadership and persistence to accomplish goals as it is about the intriguing life of one of the sports' greatest generals.
Insightful! 31. Juli 2014

I am not a hard core soccer fan by any means but my conclusion after reading this book was that for anyone who wants to understand the man vs the myth, this is the book for you. From the moment that I heard about the crushing defeat the national team inflicted on the defending world champions Spain at the recent world cup I was intrigued by what this man had instilled in his team.
Mr. Meijer does an exceptional job in laying out what Manchester United can expect in the coming months. Indeed, as the book suggests, United players will find a bit of a coach, social worker and school teacher in Van Gaal. His coaching terms don't always start off beautifully either. There is the inevitable battle or clashing of wills that some of the less 'coach-able' elements of any given team are going to come up against. But regardless of whether these same athletes can follow Van Gaal or whether they abandon ship and are replaced by those that can, Meijer shows in this book how this man brings results.
I am now officially intrigued by this complex man and will be most interested to see how he plans to resurrect the ailing fortunes of a team like Manchester United.
and the generally chronological organization is easy to follow 19. September 2014

I have just finished reading the book. Through the over three hundred pages I learned a lot about van Gaal and the game, the business, and the world of soccer, I got a condensed introduction and more. The personality and character study of van Gaal presented through an abundance of examples, testimonies, interviews, and news reports in aggregate presented a finely wrought picture of Mr. van Gaal. I wonder if Mr. Meijer could now get an interview directly with the new coach of Man United? The writing style includes familiar sports page jargon and is generally lively; and the generally chronological organization is easy to follow. I recommend this book for anyone interested in people, sport in general, and especially for those who live and breathe soccer. You will enjoy the book.
Knowing Van Gaal 10. September 2014

I learned so much about van Gaal. Not someone I particularly like but at least I now know what makes him tick. I was curious as to the struggles between he and Cruyff (who I do admire greatly). Seems like a Dutch version of the Hatfield's and McCoy's. Good to know the roots and both sides of the struggles. I like van Gaal's ideas about penalty kicks to end a game and even about throw-ins. He is obviously an innovator. I don't wish him well at Manure but I can see that he is a born winner and his success record in Europe makes him a formidable character in today's modern game. This is a well written book which is easy to read. Very well researched and put together. Highly recommend it.
Doesn't pull any punches or kicks 28. August 2014
Von Stephen Gabb - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

When a team goes through the world cup without being defeated (except for penalty kicks!) and still doesn't make the final but plays as a cooperative team more than all of the teams, you have to look more closely at the coach. Here he is, in this special book, that doesn't pull its punches but also gives credit where it is due!
