I was impressed when I learned that Reed had acquired, and was actively using, an Alpa system camera from Switzerland. One way or another, this is probably the best pure camera money can buy. It is not for the faint-hearted, either of wallet or mind, as it does no thinking for you at all. The whole thing is manual and there is not even a battery to be seen, or found. His choice is particularly suitable for landscape work and so I hoped to see something enlightening, perhaps inspiring. Sadly, this was not to be. What I got was a series of pretty ordinary black & white photos, many of which were plain unsharp but not to the extent that anyone could imagine that the author of them was displaying his art. My knowledge of Reed being limited to "Take a walk on the wild side", I expected much more. But then I saw him singing a number of his other songs the other night and I concluded the photos matched the singer. Hardly the book seller's fault, more the stupidity of the buyer assuming anyone possessed of enough knowledge and money to buy that camera would know what to do with it. All in all, a bit like money and taste.
