This particularly excellent example of Pratchett's Discworld tales tackles the subject of elves. These elves present the image of being cute only to deceive humans. In fact, they are about as agreeable as Hitler's SS. So when a bunch of them decides to crash an entire human kingdom and all its activities, problems arise. The solution is Granny Weatherwax and the witches she leads, who are not exactly nice people, either, exhibiting, as they do, positive glee in slaughtering elves. When applied to as large a body count as this novel affords, Pratchett's light tone is a little unsettling, but otherwise the book is a superior example of Pratchett's inimitable, seemingly endlessly fertile wit. Discworld's loyal readers are beginning to constitute as doughty a band as Xanth's, and all fantasy collections should provide for them accordingly. Roland Green

This is my favorite discworld novel (the other being Hogfather). Partly because Granny and Nanny and Margrat are my favorite discworld characters (apart from DEATH). Partly because the book is real fun, thoughtful, has a good and intersting plot and some amazing turnings. Honestyl, you, too, thought elves were nice, didn't you?
If you are a beginner in Pratchett`s discworld this book is a possible first (apart from the best idea of reading all the 28 novels in their chronologic order).
Only 4 stars? I think the end is a bit forced, the antler king too much of a deus ex machina for my taste. Did we really have need of him with Granny in charge?

Margrat Garlick is about to have her dream wedding. She is marrying the King. The stuff fairy tales are made of. A faerie tale is what she gets. Every bride's nightmare. The faerie host have decided they would like to crash the festivities and the Queen wants the King for her husband. At least until she's tired of him. It's up to Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, the librarian and a host of others to stop them.
I enjoyed this one, but even Pratchett mentions you need some background on this one. I strongly suggest you read at least Wyrd Sisters and Witches Abroad prior to this. It'll give you some idea of what's going on. Pratchett plays with most of the British elven legends as well as few of the Pagan Pantheon to bring this one off. (Actually, he sticks pretty close to the old legends and humorously traces their evolution into modern conception). I liked this novel not only for the usual humor, but also for the suspense aspect of it. I recommend this one if you like the fairy tales

Dieser Band der Discworld setzt thematisch direkt nach Witches Abroad an. Die Hexen kommen von ihrer Reise zurueck und die Dinge haben sich weiterentwickelt. Die Geschichte mit Magrat und Verence wird weitergefuehrt.
Da die Waende der Realitaet geschwaecht wurden haben die Elfen eine Moeglichkeit gefunden in die Scheibenwelt einzudringen, doch Elfen sind alles andere als "Merry Folk", sie sind hinterhaeltig, gefaehrlich und in der Lage Menschen nach ihrem Willen zu manipulieren.
Nun ja nicht alle Menschen, bei den Hexen klappt das nicht, aber die kann man kaum Menschen nennen.
Auch in diesem Band der Discworld spielt Pratchett mit der Voreingenommenheit in unserer Welt und bringt sie wundervoll in Szene. Man hat sehr viel zu lachen und auch dieses Buch gehoert zu denen, die man nicht so leicht aus der Hand legen kann. Die Sprache ist auch fuer Englischneulinge verstaendlich, zumindest wenn ein Grundmass an Kentnissen vorhanden ist.
