Diana Gabaldon, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Outlander series, delivers captivating tales of history, intrigue, and suspense that feature one of her most popular characters: Lord John Grey. This thrilling eBook collection—featuring three novels and one collection of novellas—follows Lord John as he defends his country, ferrets out spies, and unravels a haunting family mystery.
“Packed with vivid description and detail . . . transports readers to eighteenth-century London.”—BookPage
London, 1757. Lord John Grey, a nobleman and a high-ranking officer in His Majesty’s army, has just witnessed something shocking. But his efforts to avoid a scandal are interrupted when the Crown appoints him to investigate the brutal murder of a comrade-in-arms. Obliged to pursue two inquiries at once, Major Grey finds himself ensnared in a web of betrayal that touches every stratum of English society—and threatens all he holds dear.
A Collection of Novellas
“Gabaldon’s strengths are on full display.”—Kirkus Reviews
In Lord John and the Hellfire Club, Lord John glimpses a stranger at a gentleman’s club—and is drawn into a maze of political treachery and a dangerous underground society. In Lord John and the Succubus, English soldiers in combat are rattled by a lethal creature that appears at night, and Lord John is called to investigate. In Lord John and the Haunted Soldier, Lord John is thrust into a baffling case that forces him to confront the prospect that a traitor is among the ranks of His Majesty’s armed forces.
“First-rate . . . [Gabaldon’s] writing is always vivid and often lyrical.”—The Washington Post
It’s been seventeen years since Lord John’s father was found dead, accusations of his role as a Jacobite agent staining the family’s name. Now, Lord John’s brother has mysteriously received a page of their father’s lost diary, convincing John that someone knows the Greys’ secrets. So he turns to the only man he can trust: the Scottish Jacobite Jamie Fraser. But when Jamie yields the missing piece of an astounding puzzle, Lord John must decide whether his family’s honor is worth his life.
“Engrossing . . . masterfully paced, with exciting plot twists, swift reversals, and robust characterizations.”—The Globe and Mail
London, 1760. Paroled prisoner Jamie Fraser has sworn off politics, fighting, and war. Until Lord John Grey shows up with documents that expose a damning case of corruption against a British officer. But they also hint at a more insidious danger. Soon Lord John and Jamie are companions on the road to Ireland, a country whose dark castles hold dreadful secrets, and whose bogs hide the bones of the dead.

4.0 von 5 Sternen 5-stars for the stories, 3-stars for formatting 13. April 2013

I bought this bundle as I didn't have any of these books in Kindle format yet and it was cheaper than buying each of the ebooks individually. At the current prices, you basically get Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade for free (well, you pay $0.02 for it). ;)

I give all the stories five stars, as they're amazing and well-structured. I enjoy Lord John immensely and he really gets to shine in his novellas and shorts. The Brotherhood of the Blade and The Scottish Prisoner are the standouts here, but each story gives us excellent background and insight to this complex character. I cannot praise the stories enough. As there are already thousands of reviews for the stories out there, I'll focus mainly on the formatting issue.

I give the formatting of this bundle three stars. As anyone familiar with this series already knows, Lord John and the Hand of Devils includes three short stories. Within The Hand of Devils, they're in chronological order. However, once you add Private Matter and Brotherhood of the Blade, they are not. This bundle would have been the perfect opportunity to put all these shorts and novellas in chronological order for the reader. Unfortunately, they chose not to do that, so those who do want to read the stories in order will have to go back and forth. There is no easy way to do this either. The main TOC lists the main titles only. You have to go to the Hand of Devils to get to that book's TOC to jump to the desired short. Still, I suppose it's better than having to leave one ebook entirely to go to three other ebooks, which is the only thing saving this format from getting 1-star.

Chronological order of titles and their location numbers (at least, on my Kindle):
LJ & The Hellfire Club (1756) - Location 4963
LJ & The Private Matter (June 1757) - Location 80
LJ & The Succubus (Autumn 1757) - Location 5579
LJ & The Brotherhood of the Blade (Jan 1758) - Location 9747
LJ & The Haunted Soldier (Nov 1758) - Location 7328
The Scottish Prisoner (1760) - Location 17651

5.0 von 5 Sternen Why Did I Wait So Long Before Reading This Great Series? 28. August 2013

I have been reading Diana Gabaldon's books for over 15 years but somehow never read The Lord John Series. Needless to say, I really grew to love this character, his family, and friends. He has some great adventures and Diana really captures the time period in London and England with her marvelous descriptions of places and events. I now find myself anxiously awaiting another novel about Lord John Grey with the same eager anticipation I have for her Outlander series. Highly recommend!

3.0 von 5 Sternen Not nearly as good as Outlander Series 8. August 2013

I was craving more of the Outlander series, so much so that I decided to try out the Lord John Series. I had a very hard time getting into it, but kept plugging along. The Hand of Devils collection was downright boring. I don't enjoy the military and political stuff at all. In the Outlander series I didn't care for that stuff either, but I trudged through it because characters I cared about were still there- such as Claire & Ian.
I am currently reading the "Brotherhood of the Blade" and it is better so far. It is more personal about Lord John and not just work. I expect I will probably like The Scottish Prisoner too when I get to it, because it brings back Jamie, so I expect it will be more personal too.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Author changes it up a bit 1. Juni 2013

I enjoy the series. The author does a good job of adding to the outlander series with out trying to duplicate the outer series. I enjoy her take on history in progressing a novel. Lord John is a hero of course, understanding how he resolves internal conflict is relatable to our own human behaviors. Lord John does this most gracefully giving the perception of a man without doubts. Very well done in my opinion.

Self-disclosure-I admit I long for a link to Clair, Jamie, and the many other characters of the outlander series and my opinion may be bais. Which is the reason for trying out this series. I find the Lord John Series lacking an obsession and passion I value in the Outlander series at least in the beginning (probably due to motivations for reading the series). Still The Lord John series grows on me as the adventure grows and the character develops in my mind. Good reading you won't regret the series, be forwarned to check your bias at the door for a better read.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Diana Gabaldon....always a great read 29. Juni 2013

Ms. Gabadon once again hits it out of the park. The characters seem to jump to life and leap off the page. The character of "Lord John" is brought front and center here, and is in no danger of being eclipsed by the beloved Jamie and Claire. Ms. Gabaldon takes the sensitive issue of love full circle, from lovers to children and friends. Really, there must be a million glowing reviews already....READ IT!
