After a harrowing battle flashback, the scene shifts to one of the Culture's wonderfully landscaped, ring-shaped artificial worlds called Orbitals. A ghastly light is awaited in the sky from distant suns detonated in the war of Consider Phlebas eight centuries earlier; an occasion for sombre festivity, pyrotechnics, and a memorial symphony from exiled alien composer Ziller. Meanwhile another tortured member of Ziller's race--aggressors and victims in that more recent civil war--arrives on a mission whose dreadful nature emerges through fragments of slowly returning memory. Elsewhere, in the exuberantly imagined airsphere home of floating "behemothaurs" almost too huge to imagine, the clue to what's happening falls belatedly into inexperienced hands...
While scattering red herrings and building tension for his final burst of literal and moral fireworks, Banks shows us around the Orbital in sensuous, lyrical travelogues. Rich scenery, high living, low comedy and dangerous sports contrast with reflections on mortality and the lingering aftershock of both those wars, recalled by ravaged veterans. Look to Windward culminates with deft twists, inversions, parallels, and savage justice, as unexpected as we expect from this author. The Masaq Orbital is about to witness the light from an eight-centuries-old act of war, and the Hub Mind is concerned about the reaction of the Culture's elite. Meanwhile, Ziller, a Chelgrian composer, is preparing a major performance, and Chelgrian Major Quilan has come to the orbital to persuade Ziller to return home. Quilan is also involved in a plan to avenge the 800-year-old act of war. He is all the more willing to participate because he lost his wife in the Chelgrian Caste War, which is blamed on the intervention of the Culture, which is human. Banks makes the passions and follies of his characters real enough to remain distinct against a setting that includes continent-sized living entities and a culture embracing 31 trillion inhabitants. Even if this is no more than a thinking reader's space opera, it will definitely please such readers, in and out of Banks' established audience. Roland Green

Arguably one of Iain Banks' best science fiction works. I found myself wandering back to the first chapter time and again to reconstruct narrative strains, the themes of which are already laid down on the first pages. A book about an opus magnum which in itself has symphonic qualities. Banks also mastered a rather intricate equlibrium between an evolving tragedy of, well, orbital scale and the fine irony which is interwoven in the fictional sociography of a civilization which so adamantly confronts us with the extremes of the 'here and now'. If one does not choose to read an author's books in the order of appearance, this book would make a fine appetizer. But be prepared to reserve some place on your bookshelf. You'll be coming back for more!

Iain Banks hat es wieder einmal geschafft, mich in eine andere Welt zu entführen. In jedem Kapitel findet man neue Ideen aus dem Kultur-Universum, die einfach immer ein bisschen weiter gedacht sind als bei anderen SF-Autoren, und das Buch durchgehend spannend und mitreissend halten. Von der Qualität her würde ich die Geschichte zwischen "Excession" (mittelmaessig) und "Consider Phlebas" (genial) einordnen, auf jeden Fall ein lesenswerter Banks.

Finally after waiting quite long another book of Iain M. Banks.
It is worth reading just to get into the complex world of the Culture. It is not quite as interessting as his other Culture books, but still definitely worth reading.
