3.0 von 5 Sternen Ok - aber hatte schon bessere Reiseführer 6. Januar 2014
Von Carmen
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf

5.0 von 5 Sternen Encyclopedic guide to Hawaii 2. Dezember 2013
Von Shannon B Davis - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Taschenbuch|Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts (Was ist das?)
Encyclopedic guide to Hawaii! This guide will serve both the person trying to decide if to visit Hawaii and if so, where, as well as the person on their trip figuring out where to eat and where to drive to next. It covers all the islands, and helps you decide which islands to visit pretty well. Hotels, restaurants, sites, and roadtrip itineraries were all well-described. It even gives the details that most books would skip. I can recall the description of a small village, where, it said, the villagers do not appreciate visitors. Most guides would fail to mention the location at all. Lonely Planet Hawaii helps you so that if you DO end up there, you know the deal and understand why people aren't being as friendly as they are elsewhere.

In the beginning, numerous itineraries are offered for all sorts of travel styles and lengths of stay. In the back, as with all Lonely Planet guides, there is extensive practical information that applies to the entire set of islands. Throughout the book, the history of the islands is covered, as well as the culture, and the food. Hawaii may be a state within the United States, but visiting it is like visiting a foreign country, as it has its own rich history of the Hawaiian kingdom, its own cuisine, it's own ecosystems, and its own blend of the melting pot.

As a reviewer, I do feel a bit remiss in that I haven't been able to take my trip to Hawaii yet, so I can't tell you if it feels "real" to me. Only a local could tell you that. However, having read many travel guides about Hawaii of late, I can tell you that this one contains a lot of information you won't find elsewhere.

The only complaint I could have is that there could have been more pictures. Hawaii is a beautiful place. I'd like to see more full-color pictures to tempt me to go to one place or another.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Hawaii resident review....pretty good, but don't rely on just this book. 1. Dezember 2013

Covering all the islands in one book is a large task, but Lonely Planet does a good job, particularly noting hiking trails, beaches, and other natural sites of interest. There are good, detailed maps; websites, prices and hours are listed; and interesting history notes are included.

However, I would recommend that a visitor not rely on just this book alone when visiting. In looking at the areas I am most familiar with (Central, North Shore, Laie area, Hawaii Volcanoes Nat'l Park, and Pearl Harbor) I noticed a number of eating, shopping, or tourist areas were left out that visitors might enjoy. The index is not very extensive and leaves out quite a number sites. It is difficult to cover it all, I know, but I had to resort to searching through the book page by page for most things- this would be even more frustrating if a visitor was not sure where a particular place is.

Visitors need to do their research before arriving, checking out the areas they wish to visit for current hours, charges, and closings. (Hanging loose in Paradise might be nice, but if you want to see as much as possible, you need to plan your days) Also, look for more things to do within your interests. For example, if you are on Oahu and like to shop, Waikele Outlets in Waipio (just off H1 before Waipahu) was not listed in the book but is a terrific place to shop and is popular with tourists and locals alike. The Mormon Temple in Laie may not be open to tourists but there is are lovely, peaceful grounds to walk around in and a visitor's center, too- neither mentioned in the book. The Hawaiian Railway Society operates train tours from Ewa Beach along parts of the west coast (beautiful views!) yet it is not mentioned, either.

The people of Hawaii are the friendliest in the nation, so just ask for the best places to shop/eat/play and they will be pleased to give you great advice.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent guidebook 22. Oktober 2013
Von K. Blaine - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Taschenbuch|Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts (Was ist das?)
I ordered this guidebook, Lonely Planet Hawaii, because my husband and I took an all-too-short trip to Hawaii earlier this year, and we are both eager to go back and experience our 50th state in a little more depth than we did the first time around. I was hoping that this guidebook would help, and I was not disappointed.

Hawaii is a beautiful and complex state, and this guide covers just about every aspect of it: people, culture, history, natural resources, ecology, and cuisine, to name just a few. The book helps the reader plan a trip based on his or her individual interests, whether they are artistic, historical, or nature-oriented. There are the usual "Where to Stay" and "Where to Eat" features, as well as some "Don't Miss This" features as well. If you are traveling with children, this book includes several child-friendly attractions to help you plan a trip that the entire family can enjoy. The book includes an up-to-date driving map that includes each island, helping in the planning of an itinerary. It should be noted that the maps are not street maps; rather, they give an overview of each island. If you want a street map, you will need to go elsewhere. (I suggest the Auto Club, which has superb maps that alone are worth the price of membership if you travel a great deal.)

In our previous travels, we have relied on Eyewitness Travel Guides, and if I were forced to select only one guide, I would prefer Eyewitness. I do not know if they have one on Hawaii, but I suspect they do. The advantage of the Eyewitness guides is the superb photography that accompanies many of the cultural and geographic entries. Eyewitness claims to be "The Guides That Show You What Others Only Tell You," and we have found this to be true.

However, this is not to denigrate the Lonely Planet Guide. It too has photographs, though far fewer than an Eyewitness Guide. It includes a wealth of information about Hawaii, so much so that I am convinced that even a native Hawaiian would learn a great deal about his state by surveying this guide. A tourist will find it extremely helpful and informative. Highly recommended.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Not a guide for 1st time visitor 6. März 2014

If you visit Hawaii for many times and rent a car, this book work for you to find new places. If you visit the 1st time, this 600 page book has too many information for you, 200 page DK Eyewitness Travel Guide would be much better.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Paradise Revealed 30. November 2013
Von Wandrwoman - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Taschenbuch|Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts (Was ist das?)
I am quite partial to Lonely Planet travel guides. I find them to be comprehensive, logically organized, and intelligent. They are not lovely pictorial guides for arm chair travelers, nor lyrical cultural essays, nor erudite historical references. They are helpful and informative travel guides for those who plan to visit a particular locale.

Recently, I used a Lonely Planet guide for a trip to Germany and it was indispensable both for planning and for guidance once on the road….though the sheer heft of the book did wear a sizeable hole in my husband’s jacket pocket.

This 678 page guide to Hawaii, shares almost the same organization. The idea is that you use the first two chapters to plan your trip. If you want to understand Hawaii, you read the third.

The first chapter is “Plan Your Trip:
-General maps, the top 20 “must see” sites,
-“Need to Know” facts such as cell phone coverage, time zone, best times to go, useful websites, important telephone numbers, daily costs (budget, midrange, top end,) opening hours, transportation to and around the islands.
-“What’s New”: sites and experiences to check out if this is not your first trip to Hawaii.
-“If You Like”: suggestions for specific interests (beaches, waterfalls and swimming holes, hiking and backpacking, scenic drives, history, food and drink, etc.)
-Month by Month calendar of events
-Suggested Itineraries
-Outdoor Activities
-Regions at a Glance

The second chapter is “On the Road” which deals with each region or island in depth.
-Why visit? What’s important?
-When to visit?
-Itineraries, walking tours, maps
-Places to stay
-Where to eat
-Things to do with children

The third chapter is “Understanding Hawaii”
-The people
-The culture
-The history
-The cuisine
-The arts, the crafts
-The ecology

The last chapter is “Survival Guide”, which is an A-Z directory of just about everything you need to know, including electric outlets, radio stations, emergency medical assistance numbers, local diseases to be aware of, Customs regulations, tipping, etc.

There is a glossary, an index, and a pull out driving map of Hawaii.

Combine this Lonely Planet Guide with liberal use of Trip Advisor and you will have planned an amazing trip!
