Nice Overview Book but No Depth 9. Dezember 2012
Von KY - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
The book gives a good general overview of the various regions of Greece. It helps if you're in the process of selecting which Greek locations to visit, but not useful if you're looking for in-depth or navigation info. If you've never been to Greece, it's a great first book to start with. This edition is more colorful and has more nice pictures than the other versions of Lonely Planet that I am more familiar with, and thus is more similar to the Eyewitness Travel book series.

I had gotten this book because I was going on a Greek Isle cruise and could not find any info on Corfu (one of the port-of-call) with my other books (i.e. Rick Steve's), at the library, or online. With Corfu being a popular port-of-call for cruise ships, it was very hard to understand why there aren't more information out there.

The book does have a useful map of old-town Corfu that I could not find elsewhere, but I did not expect this book to have the kind of navigation info in a Rick Steve's book series and it did not. Luckily, I kind of figured out the Greek public transportation system based on using Rick Steve's book for Santorini and Myokonos earlier in my cruise.

As for the Sights & Activities section, I thought the book did a pretty shoddy job for Corfu. St. Spyridon's Church was not even mentioned when a quarter of the island's men are named after him in one form or another. It would have been useful to have small pictures for both the Mon Repos Estate and the Achillion Palace to understand why they're impressive as the book points out. By the way, the book misspelled the Palace as "Ahillion" without the "c". I had thought the misspelling was peculiar initially and confirmed my suspicions when I got there and verified what the road sign said. For an island as well-developed and well-frequented by cruise ships as Corfu, I am not sure why more attention wasn't devoted to it.

To be fair, the book's coverage of Santorini and Mykonos was pretty good. Oddly, coverage for Santorini neglected to mention the unforgettable donkey ride, from the old port where cruise ships would tender its passengers up 500 ft vertically to the town of Fira. The book mentioned the Greek island where Mama Mia was filmed, but forgot to mention that the movie, Summer Lovers, was filmed in Santorini.

For Mykonos, the summary description of Delos was outstanding with great pictures. Oddly, no mention of the windmills other than a dot on the city map. This row of 5 windmills right next to Little Venice is a well-known icon for Mykonos.

I was very disapointed in this editon, I allways buy Lonley Planet for all destinations all over the world.
This book had very little informations on for example hotels/restuarnts etc. It was not a Lonely Planet guide!

We were very disappointed in the Lonely Planet book for Greece and the one for Turkey. The information was out dated and in some cases misleading. In the past we had chosen to use the paper book form of Lonely Planet guides and had no problem with them, I am not sure if it is the electronic version, but I would not use them again.
