5.0 von 5 Sternen Helpful guide for 2 to 3 week holiday in Croatia 12. Mai 2013
Von Traveller
Before saying anything about the book: don't go to Croatia in July or August when prices double, it's overcrowded and bloody hot. We were there the first half of May and it was perfect.
About the lonely planet:
- useful hints as usual for all major sights and tourist areas, less for off the beaten track
- many expensive hotels listed. We preferred to stay at apartments or private rooms available in huge numbers and easy to find everywhere (many of those can also be booked online)

4.0 von 5 Sternen `The Mediterranean as it once was' 2. August 2013
Von Grady Harp - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Taschenbuch|Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts (Was ist das?)
Many people still have difficulty understand the history of this part of the world. Croatia is an independent country, but once it was part of what the world knew to be Yugoslavia after the decisions of WW II to coalesce and unify the Slavic countries of Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia, Hercegovina and Slovenia into the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia under the heinous leadership of Tito. The history involved is complex and deserves close reading to understand, but when Tito died in 1980 the unrest was already present (site the Croatian Spring of 1971). In 1991 the Bosnia war was on everyone's mind and following that siege the various states gradually regained their independence.

Croatia today has rebuilt and is a polished pearl of a destination for tourists who crave the beauties of the extraordinary coastline as well as the historic and impressive terrain of the inland portion so this country. This guide as written by Anja Mutić and Vesna Maric is lengthy and full of history and facts about every aspect of Croatia. The number of sites and hotels and eating places seem as complete as any guidebook could be. The major cities of Zagreb and Dubrovnik are described in detail and there is plentiful information about the particular sites to visit, how to get there, what to look for and facets of currency, specialty foods, customs and traditions are spread throughout this book.

One element that this reader misses is the lack of information about the Dubrovnik Festival of Arts: in its heyday that was the most import arts festival n the European continent and it no longer exists. Another missing factor here are ample color photographs to pique the travelers' interest. Maps abound and the information is through, but most readers will look for more photos to actually see what the talk is about. But for a thorough travel guide, this Lonely Planet Croatia is probably the most complete and definitely the most up to date book available. Grady Harp, August 13

5.0 von 5 Sternen As expected, another great Lonely Planet guide book! 9. Mai 2013

Not sure what the first reviewer was thinking. This is my fourth Lonely Planet book, and among the best. Good intinerary ideas, plenty of good food and hotel reviews. I'm glad that the book didnt overdo it on Dubrovik, just the right amount of info. Also, good balance in reviewing coastal areas as well as the interior and Zagreb.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Understanding Croatia Section Very Informational 11. September 2013

Croatia is not the first country that comes to mind when I think of visiting overseas but just looking at the cover of Lonely Planet's Croatia book, you can see what a beautiful country that it is. The book does feature planning your trip sections, understanding Croatia and Lonely Planet's useful survival guide section but it didn't contain many pictures which I always enjoy in travel books. You may already be familiar with Croatia but if not then the book may not give you a feel of the country. The understanding Croatia section helps on knowing what is going on in the country.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Good and Bad 25. September 2013

I love Lonely Planet publications however "Croatia" was disappointing mostly in its lack of illustrations. It has a series in the beginning of the book but after that nothing. As always though the text has a plethora of helpful information. I knew practically nothing about this area except its association with recent war but there's so much more to explore. The country has a diverse landscape that provides not only beauty but wildlife and hiking as well as resort like beach areas. As always with Lonely Planet books the text gives helpful specifics concerning the sights, how to get there, the involved costs, and what each area has to offer.

If you want a literary feel for this area you might consider reading Anthony Marra's recent "Constellation of Vital Phenomenon". It's not a happy book but I bet it becomes a classic in years to come. It's centered on a female doctor who's trying to heal people as the country is at war in the 1990's. It fleshes out the history of the conflict and the issues involved if you want just the historical highlights Lonely Planet provides them in a few pages.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Lots of Information; Few Photos 23. August 2013

Lonely Planet Croatia by Anja Mutic and Vesna Maric covers many of the places that you can visit on a trip to Croatia. This book provides relevant information on eating, sights, activities, lodging, entertainment, itineraries, highlights, etc. Croatia is probably not one of the first places one would think about when deciding where to visit yet it is full of history and culture.

Aspects of this book that I like include:

+ Current and up to date (as of printing date)
+ Compact size and can easily be taken with you during your adventures
+ The section on "Understand Croatia" was interesting and provided brief, yet good, information
+ Covers a wide variety of things to see and do

Whether you are looking for tourist spots around Croatia, plan on visiting Zagreb, seeing a Pag Island, or looking for fine Croatian cuisine this book will have something to suit your needs. As with any major traveling that you are planning to do it is important to use multiple methods to research your vacation especially if you like to go off the beaten path.

Aspects of the book that could be improved:

- Include a pull out map
- Include high quality color photographs. This book is severely lacking in photos and as the saying goes a picture is worth a thousand words.

Overall, not a bad book but it can be improved significantly by additing color photos to intrigue your curiosity.
