The first edition of this book demystified the process of well log analysis for students, researchers and practitioners. In the two decades since, the industry has changed enormously: technical staffs are smaller, and hydrocarbons are harder to locate, quantify, and produce. New drilling techniques have engendered new measurement devices incorporated into the drilling string. Corporate restructuring and the "graying" of the workforce have caused a scarcity in technical competence involved in the search and exploitation of petroleum. The updated 2nd Edition reviews logging measurement technology developed in the last twenty years, and expands the petrophysical applications of the measurements.

Well logging lies at the intersection of applied geophysics, petroleum and geotechnical engineering. It has its roots in the tentative electrical measurements in well bores which were made by the Schlumberger brothers some 80 years ago in the earliest days of systematic petroleum exploration. Today, a variety of specialized instruments is used to obtain measurements from the borehole during, as well as after, the drilling process. This readable and authoritative treatment of the physics of these measurements dispels the "black magic" of well log interpretation by relating them, including those obtained by the latest generation of tools, to rock physics. It offers a thorough exposé of the physical basis of borehole geophysical measurements, as well as an introduction to practical petrophysics -- extracting desired properties from well log measurements. "Well Logging for Earth Scientists", 2 nd edition, is thoroughly revised and extended with three new chapters, many new illustrations and expanded and updated references in each chapter. Audience: This graduate level textbook with many exercises can also serve as a useful handbook for practicing earth scientists (geophysicists, geologists, or petroleum engineers).

I got this book to teach a well logging class and as a reference. I think the book is very well written with the necessary theory to understand each of the logging tools and the physics behind the measurements. The authors guide you well through the mathematics if that is your interest, or you can get the basic of the logging techniques from other parts in the text. In summary it is a great book that I will use for years (nice it is a new book, so describes newer techniques).

Well Logging for Earth Scientists is a very good text on borehole well
log interpretaion. The text is geared toward the petroleum industry.
I would recommend this book to geologists who need indepth information
in the correlation and interpretation of well logs in the search for permiiable zones for oil and water. This text is obviously used at colleges in the petroleum engineering classes and serves these students
well. This book will not be useful for coal geology.
