Robin Pascoe berichtet über ihre ureigenen Erfahrungen als Diplomatenehefrau im Ausland. In regelmäßigen Abständen wird die Familie umgetopft in ein neues kulturelles Umfeld. Dieses Buch bereitet den nicht berufstätigen Partner auf all die Umstellungsprobleme und den damit verbundenen Stress vor. Die kleingehaltenen Kapitel machen die Lektüre sehr kurzweilig und lassen einen auch bestimmte Alltagssituationen schnell anhand des Stichwortregisters wiederfinden. Manch praktischer Tipp und viel Trost werden dem Leser zuteil.
Ich lebe nunmehr seit mehr als drei Jahre im Ausland und mir fiel das Buch in einer Bücherei in die Hände. Ich habe es geradezu verschlungen und oft "ja, genau so war es" beim Lesen gedacht. Wenn R. Pascoe so locker von der Seele herunter erzählt, ist es geradezu als sässe sie mir vis-a-vis am Kaffeetisch gegenüber und wir teilten Leid und Freud einer Versetzung ins Ausland.
Viel Balsam für die Seele und auch ein bißchen Rat ohne erhobenen Zeigefinger.

This is a straightforward and concise read about culture shock and moving abroad. It REALLY helped me out when I moved abroad. An EXCELLENT read!

A Good Overview

This book is a quick read and provides a nice overview for the person about to move abroad. It focuses on individuals who will take a foreign work assignment. It does not go into much depth and does not provide more than one or two short anecdotes in the way of examples, but it does seem to cover the broad range of issues associated with living abroad. It offers a fairly thorough treatment of issues related to family and children. Recommended at the price.

This book is ok, but covers only obvious things

This book "Living and Working Abroad" is ok. Covers a lot of common sense things, but most of it's info is obvious. Maybe a teen who's never been abroad before will find what's here to be new. But a person with experience will see that the guide lacks complexity.
I'm so glad there are books like these that tell you and try to show you how to live overseas. I never knew they existed before either, since expatriation from America is a subject that the US media considers taboo and non-existent. But yet, it's very real because many are dissatisfied in America and realize that it's not the ideal world it claims to be, nor is it the place where whatever's not possible is not possible anywhere else.
In fact, my greatest discovery overseas is that: "Beyond North America, the social climate is INFINITELY more natural and free flowing, and I am NEVER without attractive female companionship."
This book though, only gets into a few reasons for expatriation, describing only a few benefits that are at the tip of the iceberg. The rest if mostly a how-to guide that covers some practical aspects of it. So far, there hasn't been a book that addresses all the deep real life reasons for living overseas. In short, it talks only about the HOW of expatriation, not the WHY. And shouldn' the WHY be dealt with first? That's what all these authors seem to be missing, except for me. Perhaps the "WHY" reasons are taboo?
