From Booklist

This handsome set presents the lives and works of 168 of the most important artists, composers/musicians, and writers from the Renaissance to the present. It was prepared in the U.K. by Marshall Cavendish. The first eight volumes cover the Renaissance (e.g., Holbein, Palestrina, Cervantes), the seventeenth century (Caravaggio, Purcell, Milton), the eighteenth century (Hogarth, Handel, Swift), the Romantics (Goya, Liszt, Goethe), nineteenth-century Europe (Rodin, Wagner, Tolstoy), nineteenth-century America (Homer, Joplin, Dickinson), twentieth-century Europe (Duchamp, Stravinsky, Woolf), and twentieth-century America (Warhol, Gershwin, Faulkner). Volume 9 contains a cumulative index, an index of ethnic minorities (8 entries) and women (21 entries), an index by nationality, a timeline, a glossary, and a bibliography for futher reading (including some titles published in 1995).

Each six-page entry contains several pages of text summarizing the artist's life and works; boxes focusing on background, key dates, and a related subject (such as "The Cult of Celebrity" for F. Scott Fitzgerald or "The Geometry of Nature" for Cezanne); a full-page portrait or self-portrait of the artist; and one or two smaller illustrations. The illustrations are a satisfying mix of the familiar and the unfamiliar in well-reproduced color with some outstanding black-and-white photographs. The text is accessible to those of junior-high age and up and provides an interesting but brief introduction to each artist. Each volume contains a table of contents, introduction, glossary, list of books for further reading, timeline, and index; the glossary, timeline, and books for further reading are just excerpts from those in volume 9. Each volume is attractively and sturdily library bound. The carefully selected portraits are the most outstanding feature of this set. Its attractive layout will spark interest in those profiled rather than provide in-depth information.

This set would be a fine addition to junior-high, high-school, and public libraries in either reference or circulating collections.

From Library Journal

Consisting of eight volumes averaging 130 pages each and a ninth volume as an index, this simple yet well-presented overview of major Western artists, authors, and composers ranges from Dante and Giotto to Andy Warhol and Toni Morrison. The eight volumes cover the Renaissance, the 17th century, the 18th century, the Romantics, 19th-century Europe, 19th-century America, 20th-century Europe, and 20th-century America. Each volume contains a signed introduction to the period/area being covered and about six pages on each of 21 creators, plus a small time line, a basic glossary, a short "further reading" section, and an index. Entries contain an image of the artist, key dates, a background statement setting the historical context, and, in the case of artists, usually a reproduction of one of the artist's works. The ninth volume includes an index of women (21 entries) and minorities (eight entries) as well as an index by nationality. Though very general, much like the Time-Life series, this well-executed resource provides broad context on a range of cultural figures for any general reader and as such belongs in high school and public libraries that can afford it.?Jennifer L.S.
