Synopsis
Click-clack, clicketty-clack, whoo ...eee! Disaster! The fast rain to Pebblecombe has broken down. Everyone on the train wants to get to the fair and enjoy a great day out but now they're all stuck on the tracks. It is up to the Little Red Train and Duffy Driver to save the day. Do the little Red Train speeds up and is determined to get her passengers to the fair on time. As Duffy remarks at the end of the journey, 'You're the Little Red Express now!' Follow the train on its speedy journey and marvel at the wealth of detail in every picture.

This book has wonderful illustrations featuring landscapes that are incredibly detailed with all kinds of activity going on. The stories are simple and timeless -- appropriate for toddler ages. The illustrations allow for plenty of additional discussion with interested children.
It's hard to not draw comparisons with the Little Blue Train. I love the original Thomas stories but I despise the incessant merchandising of all things Thomas. Enough already! We like trains... real ones and imaginary. Semi-anthropomorphizing a locomotive is good for a few stories but there's a limit to our dwelling in that fantasy. I appreciate the fact that the Little Red Train is a machine not a character and that Duffy's world, although obviously fantastic, is quite a bit less removed from reality than Sodor. More importantly, I can read the stories to my children without selling them on a line of merchandise and training their consumer habits at the same time.

This is a great book - the pictures are full of details and the text is just charming. It keeps my three year old enchanted when we read it together. I highly recommend all the Little Red Train books (although they're a little hard to come by...but well worth the effort of tracking them down!).
