Die Frage ist, ob Dummies überhaupt Hand an einen Server legen sollen, aber wenn der Titel Programm ist, dann sollte das das richtige Buch für mich sein.
Als IPad & IPhone Besitzer wollte ich mir Zuhause einen Mac Mini als Adressbuch und Kalender-Server einrichten, da ich meine Daten keinem externen Dienstleister anvertrauen möchte.
Als Entwickler von Serversoftware bringe ich sicherlich etwas Netzwerk Knowhow mit, kenne mich aber mit OS-X Servern nicht aus und dachte, dieses Buch sollte für mein einfaches Szenario ausreichend sein.
Schon auf den ersten Seiten wird klar, das hier ganz andere Szenarien im Mittelpunkt stehen: Wie wird der Server für viele Clients eingrichtet. Ganz wichtig unter anderem, die Einrichtung eines OpenDirectory Server Dienstes.
Im Buch steht mehrfach, das sowohl für die Einrichtung eines Adressbuch- als auch eines Kalender- Dienstes ZWINGEND(!) die Einrichtung eines OpenDirectory Dienstes erforderlich ist.
Dies hat mich doch verunsichert, da ich die Dinge so einfach wie möglich halten wollte. Nach einigen Recherchen im Internet und anschliessenden Tests haben sich diese Aussagen als vollkommen falsch herausgestellt. Ich habe den Autor per E-Mail darauf hingewiesen. Die Antwort war, das dies zumindest bei Snow Leopard Server der Fall gewesen wäre. Ja, sowas passiert schon mal, wenn man mit Copy & Paste seine vorhergehenden Werke recycelt.
Generell führt das Buch an vielen Stellen langatmig durch die Bedienung der diversen Wizards, beleibt aber in Details und bei auftretenden Problemen verblüffend unscharf.
Ja, es gibt für Thunderbird ein Kalender-Plugin. Aber wie lautet die für die Einrichtung benötigte URL für den Zugriff auf den Kalendar Server ?
Abschliessend kann ich sagen, das mir dieses Werk in diesem denkbar einfachsten Zenario (das meiner Meinung nach das Hauptszenario der potentiellen Zielgruppe sein dürfte) in keinster Weise eine Hilfe war. Im Gegenteil, definitiv falsche Informationen haben zusätzlich für Verwirrung gesorgt.

A great companion to the software

This book contains several hundred pages of step-by-step instructions that show you how to do all kinds of things, including setting up an email server, using Lion Server to connect to Active Directory, and managing clients. It also explains concepts that beginners might not know about, such as the types of network directory servers you can create and access control lists for file sharing. For the reviewer who said there's nothing about DNS in the book, check out the index, where you'll find a whole column of listings that are in the book.)
Some of Lion Server's features are not easy to find -- such as using different SSL settings for different services. This book tells you where everything is in a step-by-step manner. The screen shots are very helpful as well.
A lot of the information in Lion Server for Dummies is nowhere to be seen at Apple's web site, and Lion Server's Help system is pretty sparse. I found a PDF at Apple's web site that doesn't mention some of the things you can do with Lion Server, let alone how to set it up. I found this book to be a great help in figuring out Lion Server. If you have Lion Server, you should have this book.

Book does NOT explain DNS or SSL very well at all... I've had a nightmare with setup...

Book is written for IT people. I'm pretty savvy with Macs and setups and whatnot... This book still lost me with its cryptic discussion of SSL and DNS... Basically, I tried to follow step by step with absolutely no luck. I'm gonna wait for the Missing Manual Series!
