One big puzzle 25. Januar 2011
Von Flukyspore - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
I'm a beginner Linux user and was looking for a source that would introduce me to Linux as well as would turn me into a confident beginning Linux operator. This book doesn't meet that simple criterion. It is one big puzzle from the start. And even though one might be inclined to say that this is a well though-out approach as to make the reader learn more... I don't think so. I have read many computer books before and it doesn't have to be this way.

Examples of frustrating encounters are chapters in which the author uses concepts that have yet to be introduced. It is confusing as you, as the reader, don't really know whether or not you missed something. But in every case, it turns out that the subject is being discussed further down the road. This made me then skip some chapters and start reading the "Running Commands From The Shell" chapter. But even in that chapter, I felt left in the dark as simple concepts as downloading and installing a package was not even described. In fact, you can find that particular topic in chapter one, where a few very narrow examples are given.

I don't know Mr. Negus and haven't read anything prior from him. But I feel he really let me down in starting my initial Linux experience. The reason I feel confident to write this review is that I have purchased another book which really has made the Linux experience a good one. For those who are interested.... if you're new to Linux and would like to get a kickstart... consider "A Practical Guide to Linux" by Mark Sobell.

i dont think the author planned this out 6. Mai 2011

I wish I came here and read the previous review, because I have to agree 100% with the previous reviewer (in fact I'll probably end up repeating what they said).

I will say there is good information in here if you can find it. I have been using Linux for about a year, but wanted to learn more about using CL instead of GUI, and I got that in the end, but the way they present it could get someone just getting into Linux confused. I think they should teach you the basics of what is happening, before they start telling you what to do just for the sake of doing it.

For example, even getting started in chapter two, they give you commands to change software repositories without explaining what the point of a software repository is in detail, or even bothering to explain what the command function/layout means. They take a "do this and move on" approach without going into detail of what exactly is happening. Instead, they give you a broken link to someone else's FAQ on the subject or go into details much later in the book. This is repeated throughout. I had to skip back and forth throughout the book to get concepts down, as they have you performing tasks they haven't even introduced yet. So I did learn from the book, I just feel that it would have been a lot less painful had the author taken the time to lay the book out in a cleaner way.

TL;DR - Good info to be learned, but the layout is horrible.

Linux Bible 17. Juli 2011

I bought the book for the CD. I installed Puppy Linux but it would not save sessions. So I have to keep reinstalling it every time I want to shut down. It does make things work well on a very old PC that lost its operating system..........I went to the website for the book, but no help there.
