This text has a highly applied and computational focus. It combines the important underlying theory discussions with examples from electrical engineering, computer science, physics, biology, and economics. There are twice as many examples in this edition as there were in previous editions. I'm not really sure why people dislike this book. In general, Strang writes some of the best mathematics texts out there, and this book is no exception. In fact, my only objection to this book is that it is too introductory, as is _Intro to Applied Mathematics_, but they aren't after all intended for graduate courses.
The one thing I really enjoy about his texts is that his writing, even on basic material, sometimes contains very deep insights into the underlying structure of the mathematics. Understanding a Strang textbook is the difference between actually _understanding_ mathematics and just being able to do it.
So I heartily endorse this book. If you want a higher-level text, I'd suggest Demmel's Applied Numerical Linear Algebra. But reading this book still wouldn't hurt.

What is it with you people? I see scathing review after scathing review of this book. Do you feel as though it somehow makes you into a real mathematician to belittle the informal tone? Does it make you feel any better about yourself to suggest that the target audience of this text is "kindergarteners?"
Sure, Strang's book may not be an adequate sole text from which to learn linear algebra and matrix theory. But surely serious mathematicians (as opposed to kindergarteners) would never attempt to learn a subject from a single text.
This is where the book shines - as a supplement to a more formal text. (Here, pick your own; I have my own personal favorite, but it has been out of press for years). And then read the two side by side. One provides rigor, the other, INTUITIVE UNDERSTANDING. This, after all, is where Strang's book shines - rather than providing only a formal understanding of the mathematics in question, he manages to convey an intuitive understanding of the objects represented by linear algebra methods in many common applications.

This is a great book. The author has tremendous insight into the topic and a altogether different way of presenting the concepts to its readers. It may appear hard to grasp at the beginning, when the reader is not used to the style of Dr. Strang but if you stick along, this is the book that will provide you with a different way of looking at the problems and understanding them more than you ever did. I used this book on recomendation of my professor for a system analysis course at graduate level. and I do not hesitate to recomend it to anyone who wants to understand more that just the routine algebraic operations.
