This book was an unexpected surprise! It was so refreshing to find a gay writing that was not all about sex or the usual topics, and actually had a story to go with it.
After the end of his long term relationship, which shockingly lasted more than a decade, I Liked Your Profile - Experiences in Gay Online Dating tells the story of a thirty-something man's attempt to find a new relationship using online dating services. For being penned by a non-professional author, I found the book to be generally well written. It wasn't too wordy and got right to the point of each story. I found I had a hard time putting it down once I started reading. The book definitely shows a rare, honest, amusing, educational and unique perspective of gay culture. The author has managed to retain a sense of humor, and is able to make the reader laugh when recollecting some of these strange people. He was not kidding when he wrote "brutally honest" on the back cover. I admire and appreciate the amount of personal detail included; from the author's acknowledgement of the changes in his own personality, to the occasional mention of sexual details, which are few but paint a better picture of what was happening in the particular situation.
The front cover is wildly amusing. The author has managed to squeeze several gay profile standards into one sort of "Best of" profile. This originally caught my eye, and was one of the reasons I bought the book.
The book also has the potential of appealing to straight women. Many of my female friends have said they see the same behaviors when trying to find a man worth dating. I also liked the author pointing out how many married men try to "hook up" with other men online. That could be a real eye opener for some women.
It's unfortunate that a regular man looking for a relationship with another regular man can have such a hard time, but that is a sad truth about the gay community; serious relationship oriented men are very few.
While the author struggles to retain a level of optimism, it's clear he's having a hard time, and rightly so. Hang in there, friend. I know you will meet a wonderful partner someday.
