Produktbeschreibungen

From Library Journal

The chaos of World War II London sends preteen Elizabeth White to the safety of Ireland and into the lives of the much larger and emotional O'Connor family. The enduring friendship she finds with her counterpart, Aisling, forms the framework of this novel, offering clear contrasts between the two families and countries. The early chapters of Binchy's 1982 debut novel are engagingly humorous, filled with solid characterizations of these two very different but compatible adolescents. The girls sustain their friendship and distinct personalities through regular letters, but unfortunately they must grow up and the novel may strain under the conventionality of the genre and some inconsistency, perhaps due to Binchy's inexperience as an author at the time she wrote the original story. Her cousin Kate Binchy reads the book well, capturing the innocence, yearning, and growth of the girls. Recommended for larger fiction collections.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Another masterpeice by Binchy 27. Juni 2000
Format:Taschenbuch
From the first page I found myself utterly attached to the wonderful characters. They were real people surrounded by both aweful problems and wonderful influences. I learned a lot about myself and friendship from this book. It doesn't sugarcoat real world issues. The characters are forced to deal and move on. The ending was a suprise and even though it was a downer it was good. The book offers so much to a young person like myself and I think everyone who likes cute but deep books should read it.

This book was one of the best books that I have read. I was enthralled and found it very difficult to put it down even for a moment. The women and their lives are so real. It took me to a different time and a different world. So wonderfully written that I felt I was was with these women feeling their triumphs and pain and sorrow. I laughed and I cried. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an escape. A chance to visit a different era. I look forward to reading it again and again.

5.0 von 5 Sternen This book was excellent! 1. April 1999

I've read only one other book of Binchy's (Evening Class),but I plan on reading many, many more! Binchy is wonderful at story-telling, and at developing her characters. I could envision every little detail. I honestly could not put it down, and I never wanted it to end, but as they say, "all good things must come to an end."

3.0 von 5 Sternen Disappointing 19. März 1998
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
As my first Binchy book, this was recommended to me as the best and I was disappointed. I did like the first half better than the second. By the end of the book the girls were so selfish and self-involved. If one more character told Elizabeth how magnificent she was I was ready to stop reading. And how easily they let Johnny use them both. How about a little self respect, girls. And how convenient for them that their husbands ended up as they did (I don't want to spoil the plot for others by saying what did happen to them). Sorry, but I don't understand the appeal of these two characters.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A Fantastic Beginning; A Fairly Lousy End 25. August 1998
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
I have very mixed impressions of this book. In the first parts, Binchy's style of writing gives insight to the thoughts and feelings of the many characters. I could strongly identify with Elizabeth and Aisling and rather liked them. But towards the end of the novel, the writing became weak and choppy as if Binchy was trying to end it quickly, without the same insight and detail of the beginning. And in the end, certain actions of Elizabeth and Aisling seemed to make little sense with their personalities. I give the beginning of the book a huge 5 stars and the end, 2 or 3.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Maeve Binchy's Best! 20. Februar 1998
Format:Taschenbuch
Light A Penny Candle beautifully explores the way of life of the Irish and of the English in a particular era. I laughed, I cried, and I wished the book still went on. Binchy's writing draws you into the complexity of Aisling's and Elizabeth's life, that you don't want to be taken away from it. The part that was most touching was when Aisling and Elizabeth went home to see Aisling's dying mother. It was a real tear-jerker! It made me feel as if it was someone in my family

1.0 von 5 Sternen Quite a disappointing read 20. März 2000
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
I found this novel by Binchy to be quite disappointing. I kept reading in the hopes that it would turn around at some point. I felt the characters' friendship could have been more developed in the beginning. By the end of the novel their whole characterization had gone down hill, I think she supstitued two new personalities for Elizabeth and Aisling. Not to mention the dismal view the author must hold of marriage. I mean really, it's not that bad every time around.

1.0 von 5 Sternen A most disappointing book by a great author 3. Juni 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
The first half of the book is great. However, the second half (after Elizabeth gets back to London) is getting worse and worse, the more you read. The end is disappointing, as everybody seems to go mad and out of character : Elizabeth and Aisling act in a way completely unrelated to their previous behaviours. A huge disappointment, as the author writes so well and wittingly she could certainly put her talent to better use.
