Im August war Scott Kelby in Köln, wo er ein Seminar zu seiner Show "Light it, Shoot it, Retouch it" gegeben hat. Als bekennender Scott Kelby-Fan, war es für mich Pflicht, bei diesem Event dabei zu sein und als ich nun beim Stöbern nach neuen Büchern auf das Buch zum Seminar gestoßen bin, musste auch das in mein Bücherregal.
Dies ist mein erstes Buch von Scott Kelby in seiner Muttersprache und befürchte, dass ich kaum noch eines von Ihm auf Deutsch lesen möchte. Leicht zu lesen und mindestens genauso humorvoll geschrieben, wie die Übersetzungen in die deutsche Sprache.
Das Prinzip hinter "Light it, Shoot it, Retouch it" ist einfach. Zuerst wird das Lichtsetup erklärt. Im Anschluss wird retuschiert. Und das Ganze 12 mal.

Vom einfachen Beauty-Headshot über Fashionaufnahmen bis hin zum Composing, wird auf die unterschiedlichsten Bereiche in der Studiofotografie eingegangen. Die Making-of-Bilder, die zu Beginn eines Kapitels zu sehen sind, zeigen aufgrund der verschiedenen Blickwinkel sehr deutlich, wie das Setup aufgebaut ist.
Für diejenigen, die die Lichtsetups mit Systemblitzen nachstellen wollen, gibt es die Lichtsetup-Aufbauten zudem noch einmal am Ende des Buches mit einer Auflistung, welches Equipment sich zur Umsetzung gut nutzen lässt.
Der Überwiegende Teil des Buches ist jedoch die Bildbearbeitung, und wer schon ein Buch von Scott Kelby gelesen hat, weiß, wie detailliert er diese beschreibt. Jedes Lichtsetup ist einem Thema gewidmet und diesem Thema passt er auch die Bearbeitung des Bildes an.
Vom weichen Porträt im 40er-Jahre Hollywood Style bis hin zum extrem hochkontrastigen Composing eines Basketballers, ist für jeden Geschmack etwas dabei, so dass die verschiedensten Bearbeitungstechniken nachgeahmt und erlernt werden können. Was mich allerdings arg stört ist, dass Scott Kelby als Autor von einigen Büchern zum Thema Bildbearbeitung, im Buch nur wenig mit Einstellungsebenen arbeitet und stattdessen lieber auf Ebenenkopien zurückgreift um diese in einer andere Füllmethode verrechnen zu lassen.
Was mir außerdem ein wenig fehlt, sind die Kapiteleinleitungen, die mich bei den deutschen Büchern immer zum Lachen gebracht haben, aber das ist nicht so wichtig.
Fazit:
Wer denkt, dass sich die Themen bei diesem Buch 12 mal wiederholen, liegt daneben. Zwar ist das Grundprinzip immer dasselbe, aber da nicht nur die Lichtsetups sondern auch die Bildbearbeitung sich sehr stark unterscheiden, wird das lesen in diesem Buch keineswegs langweilig.

Lighting, Shooting and a LOT of Retouching

This is a great book and here's why I give it 5 stars:
1. The content is organized very well - it is a very easy read and it can almost be used as a reference book for studio lighting and portraiture. The innovative organization of chapters, actual photographs of set-up's instead of sketches make a world of a difference between this and other similar books. The quick introduction to the techniques, equipment and book organization in the first chapter sets the tone for the reader. Simple, concise, yet a very powerful beginning. This book sets a new standard and raises the bar for it's kind.
2. The content itself is extremely rich. The chapters cover most kind of studio portraiture that a typical photographer's portfolio comprises of. The lighting and shooting setup's are explained in a concise manner and have just the right amount of detail in them. The retouching aspects are very detailed, almost 80% of every chapter (in terms of quantity of content) is retouching. But you would expect that from a Kelby book - he is a photoshop guy and it reflects in every chapter of his book. Heavy use of retouching aspect, but every single aspect worth a read and a try. This is a great knowledge base for basic and advanced retouching techniques.
3. Kelby uses very sensible gear which does not burn a big hole in your pocket (burns a hole nevertheless). He explains (his views are brief and unbiased) why he uses this gear, it's advantages and disadvantages. It is invaluable to have this kind of information if you are new to this world planning to purchase equipment for shoots. There are a lot of options out there and it is easy to get confused. IMHO, sticking to this book's advice on gear would greatly save money and time on purchasing of equipment.
I think this book is a great buy for beginners and professionals alike.
(Just one comment on Kindle readers - how in the world can you guys expect to extract value out of photography book like this on a 6 inch black and white screen!!)

When I noticed that i could buy the full kindle version now, before it's hit stores i jumped right on this, i've been reading Kelby's Blog + watching "The Grid" video podcast that he does and been looking forward to this book, i couldn't make it to the tour he just did so the book is a nice substitute.
I've always enjoyed his writing style, and he answers alot of questions I've had as a semi-pro newbie is a way that i can understand; and i must say that on my PC Monitor it's formatted perfectly, i can scroll from shot to shoot and see how it evolves step by step; i think i may prefer this over having a hardcopy.
I'd strongly recommend this to someone like me trying to figure out the best way to use your lights to create stunning images; also the procedure to really make them "pop" in your photoshop post production.
I like the detail about each shoot so you can really see what is going on; and the contact sheets were a great idea.
EDIT: the kindle version is slightly annoying b/c of the size of the images, you can't really zoom in and see them in great detail , as the other reviewer pointed out this is a bit disappointing.. particularly since the kindle edition is more expensive than the book, the content it still excellent but i did find i wanted to zoom in close than I could.

He makes everything seem simple and worth trying

This is a very well done, visual, and detailed, book. He shows and tells everything. There are photos for every aspect of the shot, from every angle, including from the ceiling looking down, so you can really envision how the set was constructed, how close the lights were to the model and each other.
He shows you the back of the camera, his exact settings including: aperture priority, ISO, f-stop, shutter speed, lens and focal length. He explains, and shows you where he focused his lights, what light modifiers he used, his power settings, and how to adapt that to your lights.
On the retouching, he takes you step-by-step through the camera raw and photo process. Each step is accompanied by a supporting photo of the screen, I would say screen grab, but it looks to be higher quality
. He includes keyboard shortcuts and explains why he is making a particular adjustment. For instance, he takes the recovery slider to the point where the model's face is properly exposed, but doesn't worry about the reflection on metal, or the light bulbs being blown out.
He demonstrates many different photographic/ lighting looks, and they are all very different:
* A classic high key beauty shot
* An edgy rock-n-roll shot, this one had some cool photoshop techniques I hadn't seen, and am looking forward to trying
* A dramatic beauty shot, with lots of contrast and shadows
* Three light lens flare. I would call this one a slightly over-exposed with cool image in sunglasses shot.
* Ring light with another cool sunglasses effect
* 3-light sports setup (masculine edgy lighting)
* 1-light full-length fashion shot, to name just a few
I like the fact that he explains how you can do this without spending a fortune, and that he includes several male shots, and doesn't limit himself to just polished female model beauty shots.
He even includes a separate chapter where he explains how to do all the exact same shots with speedlights.
He includes a gear guide that shows the exact tools he used in the book with pictures and descriptions, right up to the adapter rings and transmitters.
Kelby salts the book with his usual off the cuff humor, which I enjoy. The book, amazingly, moves very quickly, is an easy read, and will be an excellent reference book. He has the uncanny ability to make everything seem easy. And, if you follow his instructions, it probably will be.
