Twenty-eight-year-old Andrea returns home from a business trip to find Alex, her boyfriend of fourteen years, nervously waiting for her. Assuming he's finally going to propose, Andrea's instead horrified to learn he's been cheating on her and is leaving to be with the other woman, who he calls Andrea's opposite.

At first Andrea's paralyzed by shock and sadness, but the business analyst soon forms a plan: change every last detail of her life and become her opposite so Alex will come back to her.

It's a challenge at first, but soon Andrea's loving the changes she's making, the new activities she's doing, and the new people in her life. But will she change enough to get Alex back? And if she does, will he fit into the wonderful new life she's creating for herself?

"A Life That Fits" is book 5 in the "Toronto Collection" set of loosely connected novels. While most of the books are not sequels, your favorite characters will reappear across the books in the collection, letting you follow their lives after their original book ends.

Though the heroine drove me a little nuts at times, that just goes to show that I was invested in the characters and the story! This is the first book I've read from this author and I really enjoyed it. Sweet and romantic, yet realistic.

... and never buy anything from this author again.

I suppose I should say I did get what I paid for considering this was a .99 Kindle special, but I was sorely disappointed. The whole tone of this book is monotone. On the rare occasion it veers off and shows emotion, it sinks into depression. The main character doesn't need to change her lifestyle, she needs a therapist to figure out why she feels compelled to please a toxic, overbearing boyfriend. She needs to find out why she misses the friendship of a woman who it turns out dated the same guy, AND takes him back after he bounces from bed to bed on a weekly basis simply because she, too, is afraid to be alone. Puh-leez! These women don't just need hobbies, they need counseling! The only normal, "real" character in this story is Loren. I was rooting for him to find a new girlfriend when he got a new job!

On a positive note, I did make it all the way through to the end. However, it took FOREVER to get there. I think this author needs an editor. There's way too much irrelevant minutia in here that makes the story move at a snail's pace. I liked the concept of making changes in order to shake things up. It was clever and definitely stuck with me, making me wonder what small things I could do to add some excitement to my life. But I don't think she ever did enough to make a change. Even her job changes kept her in the same building. The only daring thing I think she did was the jump ride at the amusement park.

For chick-lit, I found the love story to be very dull. The characters were mostly shallow and dysfunctional. Andrea's internal conflict brought me down, I felt she would be better served in therapy. I didn't root for her, I wanted her to go away because she was depressing and had no self esteem. There was nothing very empowering or romantic, nothing to wow me or feel like pay-off for investing my time in this story.

I think this author has potential but is afraid to make bold characters who do daring things. Maybe she thinks it's unrealistic, but most of us read to escape or imagine, so some dramatic leeway is expected. This story was dull and felt like being stuck listening to a boring co-worker at lunch telling me about her dysfunctional relationship. All it makes me want to do is watch the clock and get back to my desk.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Another Great Read! 13. Juli 2011

This was a new style for me when it came to Heather Wardell's work. Usually I meet the character where they are in their present life. Then she takes me back on a journey through time to show me everything they had gone through. I would then get to return to the present and finish up with what decision this character had to make. So, when I sat down with A Life That Fits, I met Andrea and had expected a story on how her and Alex had gotten to the point of him breaking up with her. Instead, I got to go on a different journey with Heather's writing and I got to go with Andrea as she found her way to who she was. Not this person who for 14 years had done everything Alex had wanted her to do. She learned who she was and what she wanted. She made drastic changes in her life and then finally settled back into the middle and discovered who she was and what she wanted.

There were times in this book I wanted to shake Andrea as hard as I could. I wanted to give her a good talking to and tell her to get over Alex, he was no good. I knew at some point his character would crawl back begging for a return. There were several other characters in the book I enjoyed. One was Loren. I really enjoyed getting to know him. When reading this, you will meet Tina and you will want to chase her away and tell Andrea she is no good. The author weaves in a lot of different characters. This is a very good book and I think any of my readers who enjoy chick-lit are going to love this. There is a slight romance in this book in the background, but it is not the main part of the book.

I would definitely add this book to your to be read list. Be sure to check out Heather at her website and see what she's up to on facebook and twitter.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Knock It Out of the Ball Park 8. Februar 2012

Once again, Heather Wardell has exceeded by expectations with A Life that Fits. This is a story of what I think to be many women in their late twenties. Andrea come home from a business trip expecting her boyfriend of many years to be waiting for her, but when she arrives she find him nervously waiting but something just doesn't seem right. While she is expecting an proposal, he is breaking up with her and puts her whole life in a tailspin. Over the course of the next few days, she realizes that she doesn't even know who she is anymore and decides that she is going to change her life and focus on being the opposite of who she is today. She starts this process to get her boyfriend, Alex, back but more and more changes along the way. She learns about who her friends are and who they are not and has a lot of trouble along the way. The biggest question in her mind is can she win Alex back or has she lost him forever.

My favorite part of this book is that it is so real, a situation that women face every day. Heather Wardell has an outstanding ability to take situations that as women we are face with yet find very uncomfortable to deal with and write about them then in a way that allows each woman to feel empowered about herself and her life. Not an easy task at all. Also, it brings to light that even the most educated woman who is successful in her job has a need to be in a relationship and to be wanted. It is something that I know might irritate some readers but for me this was an important part of building the story. For sure, this is a book that is meant as light reading, not deep to the point of making changes in your own life but rather the story of a woman and how she transforms after really thinking that the life she wanted was all over. Self awareness and growth is really what I saw in this book. Heather Wardell has consistently brought me great joy in her books.
