Kurzbeschreibung

19. Januar 2000
Some people spend their lives reacting to what life hands them, while others craft life to fit their goals. Author Phillip C. McGraw, who is a psychologist but describes himself as a strategist, is determined to make sure that his readers are the creators of their lives, not created by their lives.

By accepting that you are personally accountable for every element of your life, McGraw says, you can erase the negative "epidemic behaviors" (found in all of American society: denial, false assumptions, inertia, deceptive masking) in your life and reach your goals.Written in a tough-love, sometimes cantankerous tone, this self-help book is not for those looking to explore their inner child or visualize away negative energy. No, this is pull-yourself-up-by-the-bootstraps advice from someone who's done just that. McGraw opens with a scene describing how he helped Oprah Winfrey survive--and win--the 1998 "Mad Cow" lawsuit in Texas, when she was having difficulty coping with the reality of what was happening to her. He helped her face the facts about the lawsuit, after which she was better able to participate in crafting a strategy to win it.

McGraw first forces you to take a good hard look at who you are by dissecting your personality. It may be painful to realize that you fall into the "Porcupine" or "Perfecto" or any of the other personality types McGraw delineates, but here it's true that there's no gain without pain, because (Life Law No. 4) "You Can't Change What You Don't Acknowledge." He then describes in depth all 10 "Life Laws"--the rules by which the world plays--that he learned the hard way. Laws such as "You Either Get It, or You Don't," "Life Is Managed; It Is Not Cured," and "You Have to Name It to Claim It" make up the bulk of the book and McGraw's realist philosophy.

If you learn and abide by the Life Laws and go on to create a Life Strategy, McGraw claims you will not only know yourself better and eliminate negative behaviors, you will also know how to reach any goal you set for yourself. --Stefanie Durbin

Produktbeschreibungen

Amazon.de

Author and reader Phillip McGraw is at the forefront of a group of self-help gurus rethinking Americans' decade-plus-long celebration of victimhood. Calling himself a realist, he outlines 10 ways to take responsibility for and change your life. His reading mirrors the style of the weekend motivational seminars he conducts, designed to spark the listener into action. The lively pace crackles with such gems as, "My dad had taught me there are times in life where you just don't want to miss a good chance to shut up." While tape 1's side A bogs down during an account of Oprah Winfrey's beef-industry battles, side B dives quickly into the meat of the audiobook, featuring anecdotes from McGraw's own life and the 10 "Life Laws"--the rules by which McGraw believes the world plays. 5.0 von 5 Sternen GOOD BETTER BEST 2. Juni 2000
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
GREAT PRINCIPLES - But I want more! I really appreciated many of his principles. Helpful and Insightful. I like how practical he is. All in all I felt the principles help me see things in a different light and have changed my perceptions and my actions in a very positive way!
Another book I just read that has some Awesome ideas and some GREAT PRINCIPLES was called "Working On Yourself Doesn't Work" by Ariel & Shya Kane... For people that have tried to change themselves...They have a great idea - STOP WORKING ON YOURSELF AND TRYING TO CHANGE YOURSELF - Nothing is wrong with you! The Result - BOTH MORE HAPPINESS AS WELL AS SUCCESS IN YOUR LIFE!
A new approach to self-help and self-discovery that avoids the pitfalls of self-analysis and self-criticism and replaces them with "neutral awareness" that heals and empowers you - and all I can tell you is it has been extremely effective for me! Their ideas are simple, yet their stories, images and analogies have had a dramatic impact on my behavior and also I handle challenges in my stride. McGraw's book is very good, but you should also look at the Kane's Working On Yourself Doesn't Work: It is the Best Book I have read in the last 12 months!

1.0 von 5 Sternen Much too basic and limiting 20. August 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
There are three flaws in his approach.
First, he makes the individual stop thinking about others, and encourages them to focus only on themselves and their own life. The correct appraoch would be to help readers focus on themselves AND other people, to live life in concert.
Second, this prevents the individual from seeing the larger framework of social activity, of which they are a single player. You don't make change through brute force, but through subtle and consistent attention to pressure points, after recognizing what they are.
Third, if I took his advice, I would be unhappier than ever. You can't make people feel comfortable with pain and suffering just by telling them that they have to deal with it. Pain is never a given. It is simply a result of bugs in the social network. His assumptions doom this book to failure from the beginning, because it springs from his own harsh view, which isn't accurate or objective.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Irritating in the extreme, the audio version is. 20. Mai 1999
Format:Hörkassette
I bought the audio version of this book because I liked the guy's persona in small doses, the times I happened to see him for about 15 minutes on Oprah. Listening to his thick Texas twang for five or six hours on tape though was enough to give me a migraine.
And the advice he dishes out is pretty simplistic, with nothing new under the sun to offer. It all boils down to "just do it," and you can get that from a Nike ad, so don't bother with this book (and do NOT buy the tapes unless you are really fond of thick Texas twangs).
His "life laws" consist of such pearls of wisdom as "Some people git it, and some don't." and "You create your own experience." and "There is no reality, only perception."
Not exactly an original thinker. I was expecting something fresher, I suppose, but this material is stale in the extreme.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Coach says "Go! Go!" 17. Mai 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
The reader might as well go ahead and buy this book if they are like I suspect most people are-- that is, ready to respond, for a moment anyway, to a good football coach telling them how to improve their life. Never mind that the book is unforgivably shallow and weak, and that it is just a bit goofy. The self aggrandizement of the author who makes it sound like Oprah is riding his shirt tails rather than the other way around is pure rah rah coach hucksterism. At least Coach McGraw does give his followers exercises to do in addition to the pep talk. Were life so simple.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Not a good book for someone in real trouble 8. September 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
It is sad to think that Amazon does not post "all" book reviews, especially those that might be critical of a best seller like this one. I did read most of the book and I must say I was very disappointed. The cookbook solutions to complex problems have much to be desired and the broadbrush categories beg to be reduced. This book is all about sales and marketing and when you have a talk show host like Oprah hawking it you are going to get buyers not matter what is says. A very sad commentary in the boob-tube world we live in.

1.0 von 5 Sternen A dangerous book. 28. August 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Puts entirely too much emphasis and burden on the individual in a complex society. Depressed people, those with fragile psyches need to come to terms with their inner reality in a setting of unconditional acceptance. Some might feel overwhelmed and defeated if the stark principles in this book don't work readily in difficult life situations. If this book is empowering to some, that's fine. But many people need a gradual, insightful approach and not the bullying, bruising method this author recommends.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Life Strategies was trite 17. Juni 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
I thought this book was going to tell me something that wasn't totally obvious. This book was a lot of rah-rah, "I know Oprah" sentiment. It is written at a third grade reading and maturity level. I felt like I was being sold a used car. If you consider yourself intelligent, save your money. However, if you are sold on worn-out hype and want to read about Oprah's trial again and again and again, this is the perfect book for you.
