While growing up in an Irish Catholic family of fifteen, life was often chaotic for young Kerry Lonergan. Yet through it all, her mother was the source of calmness, juggling everyday living with the patience of a saint and the efficiency of an engineer. Full of humor, drama, and inspiring pearls of wisdom, this story is a tribute to Bobbie Lonergan, an amazing mother who raised thirteen children and who now struggles with Alzheimer’s disease. The story begins with Kerry’s heartbreaking question, “How can I ever accept the fact that my mother no longer knows who I am?” Kerry finds the answer through a trip down memory lane that brings laughter, tears, and a personal journey that challenges her faith, but leads her back to her mother’s most powerful life lesson.

The book also contains a highly useful resources section for anyone whose life has been affected by Alzheimer’s disease. It includes Alzheimer’s statistics, information about support groups, online resources, and advocacy. These resources are regularly updated and expanded at the author’s Web site.

Ten percent of the author’s royalties earned from the sale of each paperback will be donated to Alzheimer’s research and support programs.

What a story. There was laughter, fighting. It drew me in at the very first chapter. I loved all the children, and parents. At times it seemed like the parents were very strict As it turned out a lot of good lessons were learned, witch made them good parents themselves. I would recommend this book if you like to read lives lived in real time.

Having known the family in Life Lessons for close to 40 years I laughed and cried my way through the book. Kerry's Mom was a close friend, cohort on many projects, and my bridge partner over the years. She was full of life and extrememly smart. Kerry's book truly captures life as it was in a large irish catholic family with everyone expected to work together to get through the day. Her Mom taught life lessons to her children but also to all her friends who couldn't believe how she got through each day without a complaint. Her Mom is still sweet, happy and loves to have her family around her. The book is a good resource for anyone having to deal with this disease in their family.

Kerry shares her views of being a child in the seventies and an adolescent in the eighties. Having grown up in the same era in New Jersey, I can relate to many of her insecurities. Having come from a family of two children, I still made up my own reasoning why I felt my life was so different from everyone else's just as Kerry did about her large family in the book. I too learned how lucky I was. The book is a nice tribute to a supportive mother.

Kerry's memoir touched me in many ways. As I read, I felt like I was guest in her household of 15 plus people, partaking in all the crazy antics. I took Kerry's journey with her as she coped with being the almost youngest of thirteen children, and dealt with the insecurities, hardships, and frustrations inherit in being one of the youngest and having to make your voice be heard. I marveled at her strong mother who not only held her family together, but held herself together while raising such a large family. I cried with Kerry as she watched her mother slowly deteriorate, helpless to change her path. And I learned a lot from Bobbie Lonergan, so steadfast in her faith and values, refusing to give in or give up as she guided thirteen children to be happy, healthy, and successful adults. Life Lessons is a beautiful and poignant tribute to her amazing mother.
