�ber den Autor

Michael J. Varhola is an author, editor, and lecturer who specialises in non-fiction and travel-related subjects. He is the founder and publisher of game development company Skirmisher Publishing LLC. Varhola studied in Denver and Paris before earning a degree in journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park.

It is apparent that the author, Michael Varhola, did extensive research. There are many wonderful details in this book--slang and idioms, food, education, religion, clothing and military equipment, etc. The one criticism I have is that the author gives information going into the 1870s. Since the war ended in 1865, and my area of concentration is the Civil War years, I didn't find the information following the war very useful. Overall, I found the book a valuable source on how the people of the north and south lived during those difficult times.

Sent this over to my cousin for his birthday in Scotland. He is a big collector of American Civil War memorabilia. He said the book is very well written and it was a used book, but you couldn't tell by looking at it. It was in excellent shape. It was very thick and heavy though. Had I known that ahead of time, I may not have bought it for him (due to the cost of shipping it to Scotland). The cost of the book was very reasonable, but the cost of shipping was outragous. Oh well, lesson learned.
