Pressestimmen

"In Chandler's splendid new book, "17 Lies That Are Holding You Back & the Truth That Will Set You Free, " he charms the reader with stories of his own shortcomings, but offers no reprieve for himself or the reader who identifies with him." -Dale Dauten, "King Features Syndicate"

Synopsis

This work examines over 20 lies most of us tell ourselves that prevent us from being everything we could be, lies such as: "It's who you know"; "I'm too old"; "I'm not good with people"; and "I don't have time". The author argues that what is needed to free yourself is a change of thought.

I listened to the audio tape version of this latest work by Steve Chandler and found it to contain so much important information that I listened to the 3 hour tape twice. Mr. Chandler personally reads his book to you in a very calm, informed, understanding manner. Very easy to listen to. The lies each of us tell ourselves on a daily basis prevent us from getting the most from our lives. Steve really knows these lies, because he lived most of them and was able to overcome them. He helps us understand what we must do to overcome the common lies and misconceptions and to be happier and successful. There's nothing difficult in what he recommends. It's all stuff we know, but never really zero in on these lies and therefore fail to attain our goals. He shows us how we can overcome the lies to raise our self-esteem, how we avoid taking action, and how we allow people to take advantage of us and make us mad. The many examples he provides hit home, at least for me. Mr. Chandler doesn't preach to you, but simply states the facts and gives examples of everyday situations that keep us from achieving our potential. The information presented is simple enough for everyone to understand. The moment he gives an example, you can instantly relate to similar things that happened in your own life. Everyone can benefit from this work, from teenagers to old timers. Well worth the time. Try it.

Steve Chandler's book talks about 17 lies tha hold you back. At first I put this book down after reading the chapter headings. Since I live my life not believing these lies I thought it would be a waste of time. After reading one chapter I was hooked, Steve has validated many of the truths I live by. I re-invented myself at 61 years of age to have fun in a new challenging career. Lie number three "I'm to old for that." We are in the middle of a family challenge and we acted to begin improving situation. Lie number seven, "I worry because I care."
Soon I found chapters that could help my family and me "set us free" from lies that one or more of us were believing. Lie number 10, " (some) people really upset me."
Steve has a chapter for every one, even those who believe they are happy. A great job of writing about basic life and how to deal with those barriers or lies that prevent us from being happy.
Easy, fast reading that will open your eyes to happier days.

Apart from all his truth-mongering, I suppose Steve Chandler would agree readily enough with this review's title: the message in his latest book speaks lucidly to that effect; only the message is not Steve Chandler's alone.
Let me say first that I do not find fault in his 17 LIES (however seemingly arbitrary the number seventeen, he has done his commercial advertising research!), only that it could probably have been written more effectively in 17 pages; it certainly has been done far better in the works of such writers as Idries Shah, G.I. Gurdjieff, Abraham Maslow and Colin Wilson. Steve Chandler, a sort of "COLIN WILSON Light (TM)," seems to suffer from the "conversion syndrome" of those who have hit bottom in their uneasy past, but who eventually found religion and now must give all the world their TV movie script. The sensitive reader will also perceive an underlying angst in this book. (For example, the author seems to beg justification when he is compelled to write that the Oklahoma City Bomber should be sentenced by vigilantes to death by letter bombing.)
I suspect that the ever-burgeoning self-help/New Age/pop psychology markets will be able to palm off 17 LIES on a great number of readers, for it is indeed a friendly book, one I was able to finish reading in fourty-five minutes to an hour. The book could conceivably provide the impetus to a small percentage of those readers to seek out other works which deliver the same message in a more effective form. Although it flounders under the notion that sincere, good intentions and actions are quite enough to effect a cure for all our daily hurt, 17 LIES is a good beginning for those who are not yet sure they are ready to go beyond their present programming - the decent sort of people who starve for real change but who have never before willingly offered the truly significant sacrifices that alone can fuel it.

Readers who have read Steve Chandler's other self-help books, or who have heard his audio-books, will not need to bother reading this review - for they've already clicked on the shopping cart and are checking out with their own copy of 17 Lies That are Holding You Back... Steve's books are so good that once you've experienced one you'll want the whole set.
With 17 Lies..., as with his other works, Steve Chandler moves beyond the philosphy of his contemporaries in the field of self-help and motivation. What distinguishes Chandler's writing is the insistance of personal responsibility for one's success and happiness. Unlike other authors who encourage us to apply relationship formulas or positive thinking mantras onto our lives, Chandler convinces us to get INTO our lives, examine them for what they truly are, and then take action to CHANGE our lives.
Do you have a plan for your life? A plan to change the way you think? A plan to challange your habit of deceiving yourself? If you are ready to begin today, then read or listen to 17 Lies That Are Holding You Back & The Truth That Will Set You Free. If on the other hand you believe that change is not possible because "That's just the way I am" then go ahead and stay that way - you're a believer in lie #15. Or perhaps you can't do anything to create a happier life because "I'm too old for that" - fine, your a believer in lie #3.
But if you are ready to change. If you are ready to make your life happier and ready to share that happiness with others - read Chandler's new book. Your life will change for the better as each of your lies is vanquished. YOU - CAN - DO - IT! Just read the book, just vanquish your lies, just choose to be alive.
