Kurzbeschreibung

The Roman Empire is crumbling, and a shadow looms in the east…

376 AD: the Eastern Roman Empire is alone against the tide of barbarians swelling on her borders. Emperor Valens juggles the paltry border defences to stave off invasion from the Goths north of the Danube. Meanwhile, in Constantinople, a pact between faith and politics spawns a lethal plot that will bring the dark and massive hordes from the east crashing down on these struggling borders.

The fates conspire to see Numerius Vitellius Pavo, enslaved as a boy after the death of his legionary father, thrust into the limitanei, the border legions, just before they are sent to recapture the long-lost eastern Kingdom of Bosporus. He is cast into the jaws of this plot, so twisted that the survival of the entire Roman world hangs in the balance…

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

I'm a Scottish writer, addicted to reading and writing historical fiction. My love of history was piqued during spells living and working close to both Hadrian's Wall and the Antonine Wall, sites of rich history winding back through thousands of years. The later Roman Empire and Byzantium hold a particular fascination for me. I list many fine authors amongst my influences, including: Simon Scarrow, David Gemmell, Sam Barone, Conn Iggulden, Simon Turney, Bernard Cornwell, Ben Kane & Valerio Massimo Manfredi. I also enjoy reading and writing sci-fi and black comedy. My Legionary series is set in the Eastern Roman Empire circa 376 AD and follows the adventures of the border legions as the empire begins to waver under the relentless crush of barbarians from the east and the north. My Strategos trilogy is set around the build up to the Battle of Manzikert in 1071 AD and follows the dark and troubled life of a Byzantine general in a land riven with bloodshed and doubt. All of my novels are available from good online stores in paperback and eBook format. Happy reading! www.gordondoherty.co.uk

My love of history was piqued during spells living and working close to both Hadrian's Wall and the Antonine Wall, sites of rich history winding back through thousands of years. The later Roman Empire and Byzantium hold a particular fascination for me. There is something quite special about the metamorphosis from late antiquity into the 'dark ages' and the medieval period.

While historical fiction is my passion, I enjoy writing comedy and sci-fi too. Perhaps one day I'll find a way to combine all three!

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Great Read! 5. Juni 2011
Von Aristotle S. Spencer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Gordon Doherty has brought to life this period of Roman history with a storyline that has all the hallmarks of a successful novel. This is Doherty's first novel based on the Eastern Roman Empire around 376AD. The novel lends itself to a sequel and perhaps even several. I'm definitely keen to know what happens to Pavo(the main character), to Sura (his closest friend) and to the XI Claudia (The Eleventh Claudian Legion).

Doherty has done his historical research well and the reader gains considerable knowledge and insight into Roman army life, weaponry, tactics and legion structure.

The storyline has lots of twists, many surprises and gripping descriptions of battle scenes.

For any reader interested in this period of time and who wishes to be fully engrossed for the full duration of this novel then certainly get a copy.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A moving tale of the Late Roman Empire. 1. Juni 2011
Von Edward Alexander Gerster - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Gordon Doherty has created a novel that is immensely entertaining and filled with historical references, but more importantly he has brought to life the world of the Bosporus and Constantinople during the time of Emperor Valens. An era filled with change as the Roman Empire not only tries to maintain it's borders against the Goths, but has to deal with a wave of conquest coming in from the east.

The story of the Roman legionaries is not told through the usual perspective of the rulers or generals, but instead through the eyes of Pavo, a slave turned soldier whose humanity shines through during the horrible events that unfold. The author does a wonderful job of weaving together storylines to make a cohesive novel that shows his familiarity with the writings of Bernard Cornwell, Conn Iggulden and Simon Scarrow. His characterizations are as bold and human as those of Steven Saylor, and I look forward to more from this talented author in the future.

This is not only a book for readers who enjoy military history and books on the Roman Empire, but also for readers who simply enjoy good writing. Highly recommended.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Rousing story, flawed presentation. 2. August 2011
Von Bob Jarvis - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Nothing wrong with the story, nor the historical settings. Plenty of action & enough blood 'n guts for most casual military fiction readers to revel in. My problem is with the delivery.
Firstly, there are too many modernisms in the narrative. The Centurian mentions 'scoping out enemy defences' at least three times in the first couple of chapters. This sort of talk is OK in a modern warfare novel but must have been a terribly confusing order to a 4th. century soldier of the legions. Expressions like 'taking a hit', 'keep your eyes peeled', amongst others, are littered throughout the book & grate with this reader.
Most of the characters are either good or evil & are painted black, or white, from their first introduction. Example, when Pavo, the hero, is confronted by two louts who rejoice in the names of 'Spurius' & 'Festa' you pretty much know what sort of behaviour to expect from them. These two poor boys never really stood a chance in society once they were given those names, eh? This immediate, crude type-casting, leaves little chance for any sort of suspense in the development of each of the characters. First impressions rarely change here.
Suffice to say, it's a rollicking adventure that I thought was worthwhile enough reading to the end, but the 21st Century, 'street-gang' style, narrative irritated the hell out of me.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Very Enjoyable Read 13. November 2012
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I am a huge fan of historical fiction, and have widely read many authors in this genre, some good and some not so good. I discovered `Legionary' on Amazon when it was recommended for me, and I purchased it even though I had never heard of Gordon Doherty before. Although Ancient Rome is one of my favourite periods of history I have never read anything about the later Eastern Roman empire or that period of history. I noticed there was a sequel at the time, but held off on buying it to see how I enjoyed `Legionary'. I shouldn't have worried! I'd finished `Legionary' in less than a week, and even though I was at sea at the time I used valuable wi-fi time to purchase the sequel `Viper of the North' and Gordon Doherty's other book `Strategos'. In less than a fortnight I had read all three books. It has been a while since I have discovered a new author who I have enjoyed this much.

I liked the author's balance between historical fiction and action. I feel some authors in this genre tend to favour action at the expense of history but this novel tends to feel about right to me. I also enjoyed reading about a period that I knew little about. I feel these books brought the period to life and have inspired me to do some research of my own! As I said I really enjoyed this book and its sequel and I look forward to more in the future. Highly recommended.

5.0 von 5 Sternen better than scarrow 3. Juli 2011

I've been reading a lot of fiction featuring ancient Rome recently, and this may well be the best of any of them. The story's very interesting, focuses on a part of Rome not typically featured, and has some great twists. I'll be looking forward to any other works by Doherty.
