Amazon.com

A young woman named Julia Butterfly Hill climbed a 200-foot redwood in December 1997. She didn't come down for 738 days. The tree, dubbed Luna, grows in the coastal hills of Northern California, on land owned by the Maxxam Corporation. In 1985 Maxxam acquired the previous landlord, Pacific Lumber, then proceeded to "liquidate its assets" to pay off the debt--in other words, clear-cut the old-growth redwood forest. Environmentalists charged the company with harvesting timber at a nonsustainable level. Earth First! in particular devised tree sit-ins to protest the logging. When Hill arrived on the scene after traveling cross-country on a whim, loggers were preparing to clear-cut the hillside where Luna had been growing for 1,000 years. The Legacy of Luna, part diary, part treatise, and part New Age spiritual journey, is the story of Julia Butterfly Hill's two-year arboreal odyssey.

The daughter of an itinerant preacher, Hill writes of her chance meeting with California logging protesters, the blur of events leading to her ascent of the redwood, and the daily privations of living in the tallest treehouse on earth. She weathers everything from El Niño rainstorms to shock-jock media storms. More frightening are her interactions with the loggers below, who escalate the game of chicken by cutting dangerously close to Luna (eventually succeeding at killing another activist with such tactics). "'You'd better get ready for a bad hair day!'" one logger shouts up, grimly anticipating the illegal helicopter hazing she would soon get. Celebrity environmentalists like Joan Baez and Woody Harrelson stop by, too. The notoriety has, on balance, been good to Hill and her cause. George magazine named her one of the "Ten Most Fascinating People in Politics," Good Housekeeping readers nominated her one of the "Most Admired Women" in 1998, and she was featured in People's "Most Intriguing People of the Year" issue. As a result, more Americans know about controversial forestry practices; it remains to be seen, however, whether public outrage is enough to save California's unprotected and ever-shrinking groves of redwoods. While an agreement allowed Hill to descend from her aerie and Luna to escape the saw, most of the surrounding old-growth forest in the region has been felled or will fall shortly. Still, Hill is optimistic: "Luna is only one tree. We will save her, but we will lose others. The more we stand up and demand change, though, the more things will improve." --Langdon Cook -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

From Library Journal

This is Hill's story of how she came to be a "tree-sitter" in Luna, a 200' tall, 1000-year-old redwood tree. The 25-year-old activist most assuredly did not set out to tree-sit, but when it became clear that there was no other way to prevent the Pacific Lumber Company from logging a redwood forest in Humboldt County, CA, she stayed for 738 days. The politics (the multimillion-dollar Headwaters deal), the power (billionaire Charles Hurwitz), and the people (Hill, loggers, and local citizens) make this an undeniably absorbing story. Hill does a good job of providing background on the issues (information that she herself first learned while in the tree) and the complexities and realities of arriving at a resolution to protect this tree and others. Hill was no warm-weather hippie; she endured incredible hardships. Readers, even those who find her "Butterfly" name off-putting, will come to appreciate her endurance, strength, and compassionate worldview. It's extraordinary to learn that Hill needed an appointment book and cell phone to respond to demands for her time while in the tree. Beyond the subject matter, this is a story of commitment and resolve. Recommended for all collections.

This book is comprised of two parts, the shocking reality of logging and the spiritual lessons one can learn from nature, which Julia Butterfly Hill has woven together using the words of a poet.

What I learned about logging practices has opened my eyes in much the same way that "Silent Spring" opened people's eyes decades ago. If read by enough people Julia could follow in Carson's footsteps and bring about a new awakening of environmental concience which is much needed in this fast paced modern life.

What allows Julia to make such an impact is that she has completely bared her soul to the public. She talked about life from the persepctive of 100-180 feet up in the air, and also told us how this made her feel. She also talked about what she learned from Luna, and the forest in genral. These observations she makes bring the forest to life in such a way that most people never would have thought possible.

This book has given me more food for thought than any other book has in quite a long time. I have developed huge respect for Julia Butterfly (not just as a writer, an environmentalist, or someone who held out completely for her beliefs) but as a woman.

Julia is an inspiration! 26. Juli 2000
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
For anyone at all who cares about what's going on with the destruction in the redwood forests, Julia's book is an absolute must. Her strength and courage in fighting for the cause she brings a much-needed inspiration to any reader, such as myself, who has ever considered taking action to support the forests. She even includes helpful resources in the back of the book to help would-be activists get started.

Any readers who have never seen the magnificent redwood forests of California should take a trip there to see them first-hand. After spent but a few hours there, most readers will find it impossible to ignore Julia's message. All in all, this is a truly wonderful book by a truly amazing person, and I recommend it to everyone.

I have tremendous respect for this woman. She ranks on my top ten list of amazing people. Yes, she only saved a small area--however how many ancient redwoods have her detractors saved lately? The statement she made with her activism supercedes acreage.

All of that aside, I found the book lacking important details and repeating the same ones over and over agian.

It always seemed to be storming. I wanted to hear about her family's reaction to her activism. What exactly did they think of all this? I know for a fact that many people (famous and not-so-famous) visited her in this tree, however she barely touches on all of this.

Lastly, the story ends before she comes down from Luna. One of the things that interested me was how she adjusted to life on the ground. This does not touch on any of that. It does seem to be rushed--I would be interested in a follow up book. What happens within the next few years? Still, very compelling. I thought I was knowledgable about the environmental movement, but this book taught me so much.
