YA As the name suggests, this is a science fiction version of the first part of Beowulf. It takes place on Earth's first stellar colony, where the colonists find an apparent paradise. Only Colonel Cadman Weyland, the defensive officer whose skills seem unnecessary, remains skeptical of the perfection. And when dogs and cattle begin to disappear, the colonists remain slow to tighten security against the unknown but very real recent development in the planet's evolutionary cycle. While the book's tough realism and complex characters make the story seem frighteningly real, it reads much like a Stephen King horror novel. The three authors have succeeded in writing a cohesive book which is of interest to students because of its reference to Beowulf, but great art this is not. I believe you've missed the point. Unlike yourself, the authors didn't find it necessary to preach condescendingly on the evils of disregarding the natural order of the ecosystem. Instead, they wrote a grippingly graphic tale of the horrors endured by a group of people foolish enough to do that very thing. Point made through highly entertaining illustration will always reach a greater number of people and be far more memorable and effective than any pious, self righteous lecture, no matter how well intentioned.
Besides, it was a really good story... the kind you remember clearly and recommend to friends even years after you've read it. Enjoy. ~smile~

I was so impressed by this book I still mention it in conversations with my friends. It vividly describes the colonization of a new world, and the hardships of the colonists, all well developed characters. It chronicles their battles with the supremely deadly Grendals - the most realistic and dangerous creatures I have yet to read about - leading to their spectacular victory. After reading this book you'll never feel threatened by Aliens or Velociraptors again; if it can't think we can beat it!

Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven present a sound scientific background and superb, fast paced storytelling, as in their prior colaborations. Steven Barnes does a good job in characterization, which was one of the minor weak points of the two aforementioned authors.
The Story :
The planet AVALON gets settled by a mixed group: scientists, farmers, administrators and so on. The settlement is placed on an island before the coast of the main continent to hinder biologic intoxication with earthbound genematerial.
The island seems perfectly save, but one day comes GRENDEL :
An organism with capability of hyperfast movements.
A former soldier is the hero of the story, he kills the monster, but only after it has the violated the settler's camp and killed many people. Typically the survivors blame the soldier for the killings and so he finds himself another place on the island to build his home, alone.
The scientists of AVALON do research on GRENDEL's cadaver for an explantation for GRENDEL's abilities but only when they answer the most important question :
Where does GRENDEL come from ?
the book unfolds its true action.
I recommend this book and also its sequel 'The Dragons of Heorot'.

Ranks up there with the best of alltime SF stories!!!
I keep reading this great book, again and again. It has an old plot, but timeless. Well thought out characters, plot, and the tension is riveting. It is a keeper.

Literary action movie
This book was really entertaining but definitely not the best place to start for the works of Niven/Pournelle (I'm not sure what Barnes contributed) they seem to be slumming a... Lesen Sie weiter...

Like a Grendel, the speed of this book is very uneven.
I'm a Niven/Pournelle fan but this one isn't as good as, say, "The Mote in God's Eye." There is lots of action, but some of it is hard to follow, and the spaces between... Lesen Sie weiter...
