Produktbeschreibungen

From Library Journal

...Legacy of the Dog covers fewer breeds (about 200) but is better organized. The table of contents lists seven standard categories (herding, working, sporting, hound, terrier, toy, nonsporting) and an alphabetical list of the breeds included in each category. There is a brief discussion of the history of domestic dogs, which include the characteristics of the groups chosen. Group charts display all the breeds listed in each group, making comparison very easy. Most breeds have a double-page spread with exceptional photographs (taken by the author over a three-year period) and very brief descriptions. Since Yamazaki is a photographer and not a vet, his book's emphasis is obviously on photography. One also questions some of Yamazaki's observations on the breeds themselves. For example, in a discussion of Border Collies, he remarks that "it is also well suited as a household pet,"... Both titles are highly recommended for the quality and quantity of photos...Edell Marie Schaefer, Brookfield P.L., Brookfield, Wis.

This is a very nicely organized guidebook, containing near-perfect color photograhs of different breeds. The photos are mostly presented on white backgrounds. While this technique sometimes creates a rather "stiff" and "unnatural" appearance of animal subjects, such is NOT the case here. Tetsu Yamazaki's talents as a photographer are incredible -- the photos help amplify characteristic traits of the dogs, such as alertness and self-assurance. Indeed, in many cases they almost appear to want to "walk right off the page."

The dogs are organized by general breed category (sporting, toy, working, etc), and by browsing through the book, one quickly learns where to place different breeds. The descriptions are generally accurate, although somewhat brief. Typical heights and weights are given (for either sex of the breed), but these must be taken as approximations. For instance, a male mastiff is said to tip the scales at 180 pounds. Yet it is not unusual for males of this breed to exceed 200 pounds of rambunctious muscle. So take the measures as a very general "rule of thumb."

One of the nicest features of this book is that it includes some breeds that are relatively unknown in the U.S. and/or not recognized by the AKC. Breeds like the Shiba Inu (from Japan) and the Kromfohrlander (Germany) are deserving of serious attention, and these and others receive that here. It is also nice to see the Australian Kelpie presented and accurately described as "capable of a lightning start and a quick dead stop." All in all, this is a very lively and engrossing introduction to the canine world. It's only fault (and a minor one) is that it does not go into as much detail on temperament as some other books do. Nevertheless, it is a book that any dog lover will turn to again and again, so it is well worth the purchase.

This is a must have book for dog lovers. We continue to find the information in the book interesting after referencing the book for over two years now. We keep finding little details on various breeds that we pass along to friends and family to help them with their decisions concerning dog ownership. It really is a great collection of pictures and information. It also makes a great gift!

I can't agree more with the other reviewers. This is an excellent photo album of dogs. The text (translated from Japanese) is also excellent. (By the way, the American edition is much better published than the Japanese one, IMHO.) This is a must-have reference for all dog-lovers.

Most highly recommended.

Should be part of every dog lover's reference library
A fascinating and informative book. Besides presentation, what I liked best was the book's focus on time-honored service breeds, rather than just the fashionable well-known breeds... Lesen Sie weiter...
