Over the course of the past couple of decades, the martial arts industry has increased dramatically in size and, like any other trend, thousands of people have jumped on the bandwagon, peddling substandard martial arts classes to a public that is generally uneducated.

The unfortunate reality is that even the 'educated' consumer often doesn’t understand the right questions to ask when looking for a martial arts school.

Occasionally I will have a potential client ask me, "What qualifications do your instructors have?" When I explain to them that our instructors undergo an extensive certification program where they are taught how to teach, some of those people are satisfied or even impressed.

Others of them simply counter by saying, "No, I mean what degree of black belt are they?" I'm sorry, I misunderstood. I thought you cared how well they could teach, not how well they could kick.

I have written this book with the intent of helping new instructors become good instructors, good instructors become great instructors, and great instructors become powerful leaders that people strive to emulate.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent for teachers - martial art or otherwise. 28. Januar 2013

Disclaimer: I knew the late Mr. Bown in passing.

The book is an excellent guide for new instructors in martial arts but would also be useful for teaching other physical skills. Clear, easy to read, and well-structured.There is a lot of good information here and I'd recommend it highly. I no longer teach martial arts but it would of been very welcome back when I did.

5.0 von 5 Sternen From a student 14. Dezember 2012

Its been said that teaching is a way to master a subject. I will not be teaching martial arts anytime soon :)
But reading a book on teaching martial arts seemed like a good way to gain more insight to one of my favorite activities.

This book has helped me to become a better student. Many of the do's and don'ts for the instructor are useful to know as a student. For example - one of the points was:
"...Dont say the same thing three or four different ways. This is a good strategy to use over the long term, but not in a five-minute period of time. It causes some students to think you are saying more than you actually are."
As a student I sometimes rephrase what the instructor just said, to see if I understood. I appreciate knowing that this rephrasing may not be ideal.

The book presents ideas in a succinct manner that gets the information across, with enough background and development that the flow is smooth and not like a big bullet list. In all its a great book, easy to read and as a student it is helpful to know some of the extra details about what the instructor is doing.

This is one of the better books I have read on the subject of teaching martial arts. Overall, it is a very accessible work. It is also very much based on the author's individual experiences and personal viewpoint. Most of the time, I think this is helpful for the reader -- it gives you the context for what the author is trying to tell you. However, there is at least one point in this book where Mr. Bown recommends a course of action that I find highly questionable. He seems to recommend that, if you are challenged to a fight by someone to prove your legitimacy as an instructor, most especially if you emphasize self-defense in teaching your art, that you should set an appointment to meet with your challenger, and fight it out with him. He suggests that having a "second" present would be a good idea, as well. I believe this counts as a duel, and is actually illegal -- both under Common Law, and depending on the jurisdiction where you live, quite possibly explicitly by statute law as well. As an instructor, if I behaved in this way, I would also be setting an appallingly poor example for my students if I needlessly brawl with any challenger who feels they have something to prove.

So, this is often a worthwhile book, but do be prepared to treat some of the author's conclusions and recommendations with caution.
3.0 von 5 Sternen Sound fundamental start of building up your own "dojo" 19. Juli 2013

There may be many things in the book that are known, and some that isn't. Anyway it gets you through all the different areas that you should think about while running a "dojo". In that sense a must read for everbody.
The three stars are rated for how much I got from it, and the "american" factor in the book, were I feel as an european things might differ a bit.
3.0 von 5 Sternen Good tips, but no big revelations 4. Januar 2013

Tim Brown's book "Leading the Way" edited by Rory Miller contains some good information on teaching martial arts, with an emphasis on teaching kids classes. The tips are good, although I've heard most of them before, so there were really no revelations here. Still, it should prove useful to have many of them in one place, and the book will likely be a quick reference material in future for some good reminders.

The Kindle edition contained numerous formatting errors that were distracting.

The author's style of writing is somewhat unpolished, which isn't surprising considering that he passed away unexpectedly, and this reads a bit like an unfinished draft that could have used some more editing (though I understand and respect Rory's decision not to change too much for fear of losing the author's voice).

All in all, it was an ok read, though I was hoping for more.
