Within six months, an aggressive cancer killed Lisa Ham, a Raleigh, North Carolina mom at the young age of

39. Her husband, Bruce, was left scrambling to pick up the pieces of their life, while maneuvering the world with

a broken heart. The responsibilities of being a single father to his three active daughters were overwhelming.

Bruce wrestled with his faith and questioned his ability to parent competently without Lisa by his side. But

slowly, his wife’s tough spirit inspired Bruce to shape his new normal and to find inner peace and laughter again.

Along his personal journey, he became his girls' confidante, while mastering hair dryers, shopping trips, tights

and braids.

This is a sweet, humorous and above all honest memoir. Thanks to Bruce Ham for being brave enough to share that even in the toughest times there can be light. It is a gentle reminder for us all to celebrate life and those we share it with!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Astonishingly honest, an exceptional book 18. September 2013

Bruce Ham is a friend of mine. His family and my family go to the same church, and the daughters he details so lovingly in this book are among my favorite children, so this is not going to be an unbiased review.

That said, this is an astounding book. I know Bruce to be an exceptional storyteller and a tremendously funny and insightful guy. Those qualities are present in spades in Laughter, Tears and Braids.

At times, I felt like I was seeing things I shouldn't see, learning things I shouldn't know, but it was Bruce guiding me through the hellish months of his wife's illness, and the way he handles it made it ok to be there in the pages of the book with him. I cannot imagine being as brutally honest and self-aware as he is in this book. He deserves all the credit in the world for that.

This is a sad, devastating story with a hopeful ending, about an amazing guy and his wonderful wife and their unbelievably strong family and how they all stumbled and lurched through an unexpected, too-quick and faith-crushing loss, and how they have recovered since. It's sad, but it's also funny, hysterically so in many places. There are parts that are laugh-out-loud-and-read-the-paragraph-to-your-wife-so-you-can-both-laugh funny, and I may never think about vasectomies in the same way again.

Bruce has given a tremendous gift to his daughters in this book, and to the rest of us. Read it. You will be happy you did.

5.0 von 5 Sternen I plan to read it again. 10. Dezember 2013

It took me two days to read it only because I had to go to work. I sobbed in some parts and had to put the book down to laugh so hard it hurt. Yeah it has some language, and it was not written for young or small children. It was written to help the author, his family and hopefully others to travel that awful road of grief.
If or when you have to travel that road, all the help you can get is good, each journey is different, but all the hand holds help.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Honesty and Truth 16. September 2013

I received this book Friday afternoon and made time the rest of a busy weekend to finish it Sunday night. It is honest. It is compelling to read, and I am amazed at the parallels in life with other great losses: divorce, prodigal children, loss of home....It reminded me of the classic WHEN BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE by Rabbi Kushner. I am impressed with the spirit to learn to do with his girls what their mom would have done: basically, "do I have someone else do this for them or do I learn to do it for/with them?" (my quotes). I wish I were so brave and energetic! I will be glad to share this book with friends. It is much larger than I believe even Mr. Ham realizes. Maybe it takes "several years of age beyond his" to understand the universality of enormous loss. And I appreciate his gumption to live, really live, again.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Outstanding Book 14. Oktober 2013

It was a very good book for marriages - a great example of living by the "for better for worse" vows stated on wedding day. Bruce is the exmaple to others for the love in a marriage. All couples should read this book. I appreciated his candor.
