Auch in diesem Buch kehrt Pratchett zu dem Protagonisten seiner ersten Discworld-Erzählung zurück: dem linkischen und feigen Zauberer Rincewind, der regelmäßig in Schwierigkeiten gerät, je mehr er versucht, sie zu vermeiden. Rincewinds Ankunft in Fourecks hat das Raum-Zeit-Kontinuum durcheinandergebracht und er hat nun die Aufgabe, das wieder gerade zu biegen, bevor der ganze Ort austrocknet und einfach weggeweht wird. Die Aufgabe ist jedoch ziemlich kompliziert, denn das eigentliche Problem liegt 30.000 Jahre zurück -- genau da, wo jetzt die Fakultät der Unsichtbaren Universität ist. Ziemlich furchteinflößend ist auch der für einen Zauberer typische Instinkt, ziellos durch gefährliche Orte zu irren, um dann anzuhalten und darüber zu diskutieren, wie gefährlich dieser Ort denn nun wirklich ist.
Wenn Ihnen das auch alles sehr rätselhaft erscheint, machen Sie sich keine Sorgen. Sie müssen vorher noch nichts von Pratchett gelesen haben -- nicht einmal die früheren fünf Discworld-Erzählungen, in denen Rincewind vorkommt (The Colour of Magic, The Light Fantastic, Sourcery, Eric und Interesting Times) -- und können trotzdem seine neueste Erzählung genießen. Sie müssen auch noch nicht in Australien gewesen sein. Wenn Sie das Buch jedoch gelesen haben, werden Sie Lust bekommen, genau diese beiden Dinge zu tun. --Nona Vero

Terry Pratchett's 22nd Discworld novel, The Last Continent, is a lighthearted tour of the fantasy land of Fourecks, a very Australian sort of place, with brief courses in theoretical physics and evolution thrown in for good measure. Pratchett returns to his first Discworld protagonist, the inept and cowardly wizard Rincewind, who habitually runs into trouble as fast as he flees. Rincewind's arrival in Fourecks has distorted the space-time continuum, and he has to sort it out before the whole place dries up and blows away. The situation is complicated because the actual problem is located 30,000 years in the past--just where the Faculty of the Unseen University currently are. Pretty frightening, given "the true wizard's instinct to amble aimlessly into dangerous places," and then "stop and argue ... about exactly what kind of danger it [is]."
If you're baffled by all this, no worries, mate. You needn't have read Pratchett before--not even the five previous Discworld novels starring Rincewind (The Colour of Magic, The Light Fantastic, Sourcery, Eric, and Interesting Times)--to enjoy this latest romp. 'The Last Continent' takes it's place in the Discworld series as another hilarious political insight into different cultures. I found that this book was certainly one of the more clever additions to the series, since in every sentence a little jewel of social comment into Australian culture is buried. For all you Aussie Discworld fans, and I know there are a lot of you out there, if you could only read one book this year, make it this one. For all you non-Australian fans, and I know there are probably more of you out there, your opininon of this book can range from the fantastic, to the totally lame. One begins to wonder if this book was written especially for Pratchett's Aussie fans, for they're the only one's who will get all the hidden gags. So if you really want to enjoy this book to it's absoloute fullest (and let me tell you, it has great potential) brush up on your Australian folklore, dialouge, beer, traditions, animals, landscape, geography, politics, foods, opera singers, cities, plants, television, movies, ballads, buildings, sports, haunted breweries, gay festivals, myths, and natives. But if you're not up to it, just enjoy the wizard jokes put in it just for you, ok?

Being an avid fan of Terry Pratchett I bought this book confident that I was in for a good read. Pratchett's track record for producing quality fantasy fiction is second to none as his sales figures would suggest. You are often reminded that his fantasy world perhaps is not too far removed from our real world. Nevertheless, the Last Continent was disapointing. The plot of the book does not seem to develop so much as just plod along and suddenly ends in a way that leaves you a bit bemused. I felt either there was a really big joke in the book I had failed to see or that I had missed the point completely. The main thing missing from the book in my view was the can't-put-down factor that is usually to be found in Pratchett's work. The way the story moves sharply from one location to another almost every three quarters of a page doesn't help as you lose continuity very easily. I finished the book almost out of a sense of duty. If this had been my first Pratchett book it may well have been my last (or maybe I have been spoilt by Pratchett's excellent offerings up to now). I hope for better from Pratchett and hope this was just a blip.

Well. This is the third novel I've read by TP, and it has pros and cons. I love the storytelling, but it needs some tying in to the rest of the milleu that TP has created...and it has some loopholes. But all in all, it is well worth buying and reading. An excellent book for discworld fans, but not quite close to the quality of Small Gods, or Good Omens....it needs to be read with the other Discworld novels to get the needed clarity...but Terry all the way! A great read...I couldn't put it down.

Well-done in the small, but not much of a plot
